Warning over logbooks

Motorists are being warned to be on the lookout for criminals taking advantage of a change in car documentation.

Since June, motorists re-taxing their cars have been issued with a new four-sided V5C registration document and have been told to destroy their old V5 logbook. The AA fears that car thieves could be keeping the old V5 logbooks and using them to mask the true identity of stolen cars.

While the DVLA can confirm whether a car has been issued with a new V5C document, it will only do so after it has been bought, which is too late for a prospective buyer. The problem should cease to exist when all V5 logbooks have left circulation and become invalid in July 2005.

David Motton, What Car?'s editor, said: 'Always be wary of deals that look too good to be true. Don't buy a car without a complete logbook, and check the details on it match up with the seller the car and the car's vehicle identification number (VIN) on the chassis.'

Please pass this on to your friends and families.
