Just read a Topic re:Handling and just thought i'd ask...................

I have a E36 328 Sport Coupe which has 17"M3 wheels fitted. It has Yoko 235/40/17's on the rear A539 i think!!!! and i fitted 215/45/17 on the front when the original 235's died, as i heard from loads of people this was the way to go...........

however all is ok except that when going over bumps the rear end almost feels as if it moves sideways especially over drain lids etc.

Any ideas??????????????

Hi woody,

had the same problem with my car (320i Se) except at the front, felt like i was in a yacht. Turned out to be may shocks! got some new ones and now its glued to the road!!

Check it out and let me know how you get.

Good Luck M8.

Did the shocks do the job? and if so any special type? I have a 99Z3 2.8 and it follows every deviation in the road and feels quite unsafe. I have 18" MV spokes on and the BMW dealer suggests that is the problem but I have had low profiles before, but never felt so unsafe!

I can relate to the sliding feeling on drain lids, both my wifes e30 and my e36 do it. We've both got H&R full suspensions fitted, so I'm a little reluctant to think its shocks.

Both of our cars are well over due to have all the major bushings changed for sturdier items, and we are running oversized wheels( hers 17's his 18's ). I doubt either of these help the handling characteristics much.

i read a artical about wheel sizes on bmw cars and a bmw expert with wheels and tyres said this.

e30  no bigger than 16's or it upsets the handling ,also certain makes of tyre dont work well.

e36 no bigger than 17's  or it upsets the handling, also certain makes of tyre,

he went on to say it may look nice with bigger wheels but these cars dont handle with any bigger wheel  than he said regardless of suspension setup.

if you want the car to handle then these sizes are the best for these 2 cars.

i dont know if it will help but i took his advice and i found a big improvement.

just a little crazy.

Well I would say he's probably right and the e36's stance does look better on 17's.

However my 325 coupe handles like she's on rails with the mods I've done so far, and as much as I'd like a set of M3 17's for the winter, I'd be scooping up tarmac if I went down an inch.

the actual size of wheel and tyre dosnt change much at all .

if the wheel size goes up the profile comes down to compensate .

say 16" alloys from bmw have 225/55/16. the new bigger wheel would have

225/45/17  like on the e36 m3 at the front . so you would only realy be about 5mm lower .  all this is so the gearbox and speedo run at the correct rating, otherwise when your speedo said 30mph you would  proberbly be doing 34mph ,,scary if you are going past tight ass speed camera toting pc plod.

just a little crazy.
