revs sticking at 3000rpm

   hi i just bought a 316i compact 1.9 1999. the car runs great but sometimes when in first or second gear the revs go up very slow and dont go higher than 3000. as it only happens now and again i am not that worried and the car runs great. if it happens in first gear i change into second and it goes back to normal. same in second gear if it happens when i go into third it is fine. im sure it will be some stupid little thing. has anyone experienced this problem? any advice welcome
