OK, I know its not a BMW specific question, but I thought I'd see if any of you might know anyway. There is a desktop PC with a digital modem currently installed, which needs to have the original analugie modem put back in. Does anyone know if there is much involved with doing this, or any special tools required(apart from an earthing wrist strap). Don't want to try doing it and make a mess, as its not my PC. I guess the original drivers would need to be re-installed?

Thanks,
Kevin.

Should be easy .. Would recommend installing the drivers on the system before you actually fit the card tho ... The system will have far better chance of identifying it that way when it detects it.

As far as tools go ... All you should need is a small posi/phillips driver .. or if its a compaq/hp .. a small  Star ended one ... dunno the correct name for that fitment tho....sorry.

I would uninstall the drivers for the other modem as well before you put the new one in

Kevin

If you go Start/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs you should find the software components for the digital modem.  Remove the software there then remove the card from the PC before installing the analogue modem.  To install the software side, go back to control panel and Add Hardware.

Any problems, PM me.

One quick word of advice...

...before you open up your pc, get yourself an antic static strap and make sure you earth yourself properly. What you can do is leave your pc plugged in, but make sure the power switch is set to off.  Then make sure you earth yourself off something - I reccomend a radiator.
If you don't do this once you open up the box you risk frying the pc's mainboard by discharging static electricity that builds up inside the box.

Thanks Ronnie.

I was going to get one of the wrist straps that has an earth pin connector that can plug into the wall.

Well,
Since it was my father-in-laws machine and I'm under pressure timewise these days I decided to send it to a local PC repair shop to get the modem installed and tested, and also get the latest OS patches and antivirus s/w installed.

However, I put the unit on my front seat without realising that there was a small bracket sticking out the back of it, which tore a 2" hole in the seat fabric, which was perfect before
So, I spent all Saturday night repairing it, probaly the same amound of time it would have taken the install the modem and other s/w myself in the first place.

Oh well, such is life

Thanks for all the advice guys. In future, I will do these type of jobs myself (and carry PCs in the boot)
