    Posted: 17-March-2003 at 16:16

Hi guys,

Hope you can help me (again!) with this one.

The water level gauge on the dash is warning me that the level is getting low (its currenty one green block above the amber) When I checked the level it was actual filled to the max.

This problem only started after I had a new radiator and thermostat fitted, I'm a little worried that this might not be something as simple as a faulty sensor and could be more serious. The engine temp when running seems ok, the needle will sit at exactly half way on the temp gauge.

has anyone had any similar problems or ideas?

Thanks guys

I dont have a water level guage on mine, just temp, rest is done by the display beneath the clocks, but I have just had cooling system problems, rather disasterous ones!

Are you finding that even when the car has been left overnight, when you remove the radiator cap you get a big inrush of air?

Are you getting air locks?, car at normal temp, heater not as warm as it should be?

Does the coolant get hot for no apparent reason?, eg, youve just done a run down the motorway, stopped in a layby to get something out of the boot and the coolant is too hot (warnings on display below clocks)?

I thought my problems has only started after I had removed the radiator cap and water escaped, I thought I hadnt let it cool down enough, but unfortunately that wasnt the case, my mechanic tells me the antifreeze has eaten the head, the other thing I noticed was the pipes to the radiator were "rock hard" when the engine was running, I now know this was due to number 2 & 3 cylinders pumping up the water system!

In the latter stages of faliure, when started from cold it would appear to be only firing on 5 instead of six, a quick blip of the accelerator would soon solve this, but it is now obvious it was water in the cylinder.

I hope none of this is true for you, I'm told the older cars are vunerable to this sort of damage, as antifreeze wasnt as advanced "then" as it is now, even being called coolant now.

Good luck

Best Wishes

Nigel

Theres no rush of air when I remove the radiator cap and the heater works fine plus there hasnt been any warning lights, I'm probably worrying over nothing more than a faulty sensor - I just dont fancy having to get the block replaced because its warped if it turns out to be something more serious!!

micky_h, I dont have the owners manual for my car, but i assumed that the digital gauge was for water level, I could be wrong though - either way I've plenty of water in there but it keeps telling me theres  "low water level" (or something like that!) on the digital read out when I start the car.

Does anyone know where this sensor is located?

thanks for all your help guys

Right that green blocked sector IS the service indicator. The warning ur getting will probably be for ur washser bottle rather than the radiator (if there is a warning for the rad i would possibly think it would be low coolant level).

Cheers micky_h, thanks for that.

The warning is low coolant level (I remember it now you've said it) - but the water level is on max in the radiator.

Have a word with a main dealer, I have discovered that there was a recall for E34's that involved a FREE replacement radiator cap. Basically the design changed slightly and it has a new part No. I believe the design change will elliminate any coolant system overpressurisation. If you take the radiator cap off, there should be a number stamped on it (don't ask me what the number is, as I now drive an E36 M3) quote this number to the parts dept and see what comes up. Hope this helps.

I spoke to my local dealer and my car has the correct rad cap on it.

Thanks for your help though guys - i think I'm going to have to give in and pay BMW to fault find the problem with the coolant level warning
