The wife has just got her new company car - 320d sport ( had a 318iSE before)- and I'm hoping it will get faster the more miles it does! She had a Passat 130 Tdi loan car while she waited for the BM and that really flew. It had 5k miles on it so I'm thinking these diesels will loosen up a bit more? At the moment i'm pretty disapointed in the overall performance and 6th gear seems a waste of time! Also, the gear box is sooo notchy it's difficult to change gear smoothly.

 Any thoughts much appreciated. Cheers.

The gearboxes are Getrag and are known to be notchy and ususally ease with miles. The BMW has 136bhp and will get better with miles. They remap easily and 160bhp+ can be had.

The BMW unit delivers its power slightly differently from the VW one.

BMW - Common Rail Direct Inhection - smoother
VW - Pump Duse - more power

I felt that the 320d was slower and less fuel efficient that the PD130 engined VWs so that's why I'm in a Bora now...

The bmw 2 litre diesel engine develops 150bhp. When it was first introduced the output was 136 bhp but it was increase a couple of years later.

Yup, the power difference made me surprised at how much faster the VW felt. I think it'll be to do with the PD unit's fairly steep torque curve and the BMW's more civilsed one.

Even Evo magazine liked the 150bhp VW diesel. They said that the diesel GT was better than the petrol gti turbo.

Ah yes I forgot its been tuned up. My parents have a
Rover 75 which has the BMW 2.0 diesel engine, that
produces 116bhp as std with an option of 131bhp.
The BMW differs by having a variable vain turbo or
something.

The unit is refined but has short rev range, not much
power after 3,000rpm.

An E46 320d was the first BMW is drove as my parents own one (and a 330Ci Sport). I felt it pulled really hard, but dies just as you are starting to enjoy it :( I also tested a Golf 160 TD which did feel more powerful, revved a bit higher, but didnt come in so quickly.

I really really really want to drive a 330d/Cd now.

The 320d Sport is the facelifted version of the 150 bhp engine.  As has been said on here - it will loosen up and get quieter too.  Is yours manual or automatic ?

When I drove a manual one I thought it was a very impressive engine. Much more torque that the 2L petrol and more usuable in everyday situations.

Here are the figures for comparison to the VW:

Car         &nb sp;         &nb sp;   top speed      torque    0-62mph

BMW 320d (150ps) -  137         &nb sp;    243       8.8

VW 130         &nb sp;         129         &nb sp;    210       9.9

So your BMW should be quicker and maybe feel a bit quicker too and if it doesn't then get it checked out, but as you say it does need to run in and diesels take a little longer than pertrols I thnk. My 330d Sport puts a smile on my face everyday - and I look forward to the 335 one day although I hope BMW sort out the disastrous sports suspension for the E90.

It's a manual one but the gears are really notchy as I've said before. The sports suspension is a bit firm ( not as hard as my CTR ) but I think the wifes getting used to it now although she still complains about the tram-lining ( 18's - what do you expect?!)

Anyway, it was quite good fun in the snow last night!

simnew

Why are you comparing the 320d against the Golf 130pd?  Surely if you are trying to compare like for like, you should compare against the 150pd, which is quick.

150         &nb sp;   236         &nb sp;   8.6

Those huge alloy wheels and wide tyres will slow the car down quite a bit.  Many folks seem to think that bigger, wider alloys will make the car corner harder with no side-effects.  But each extra lb of rotational weight is equivalent to several lb of static weight (depending on wheel design and exact road speed).  Throw in the increased-drag bodykit, and you have a 320d Sport which is slower in a straight line on the motorway than a pauper-spec 320d ES.  BMW no longer makes drivetrain changes to its "Sport" models - the name doesn't really mean anything any more.

Also consider that you will never know if a car is faster than one you drove previously until you time them both.  The massive, thumping power delivery of an up-spec VAG turbodiesel is what you remember - the pathetic off-boost delivery and severely restricted rev range you probably won't.

I've come to the conclusion that this car isn't as good as I hoped but as I hardly drive it anyway it doesn't matter that much! At least it looks good and is fairly comfy so the wife is happy - perhaps now's the time to 'persuade' her that I need an M3 or something other than the CTR......
