All,

Sun roof on the 320 is totally seized, any one got any suggestions on how to go about rectifying this problem?

Geoff,

Does it try to open and just seem too stiff, or is it just not moving at all?

If it's the first scenario, don't force it of you will either break the winder or the cable in the sunroof mechanism. If the second scenario, the cable might be broken already.

The seals on the sunroof panel itself perish over time and swell, making the opening of the roof in sliding mode almost impossible without helping the panel down from outside with your hand. However, a problem seal should not stop the roof from opening and closing in tilt mode.

@ Kevin - It tries to open upwards but thats it.

Played around with it this morning and got it slightly open.    When I turn the handle it moves slightly, but then just spins.  Sprayed it with loads of WD40, still to no avail - angle grinder will be coming out shortly

Got it sorted (will an extra pair of hands)

Cause: Sunroof seal had deteriorated that much that it was jamming it.  Once this seal was removed we were able to move it slowly back and forward, little by little until eventually we got it open.  Good dose of WD40 to finish.

I would highly recommend anyone with a sun roof to check and clear out (if necessary) the sun roof guide rails, as you wouldn't believe the amount of dirty that had gathered on mine.  While your at it clean out the sun roof drains with a cable tie - prevention any all that!

Thanks for the help guys! posticon

You should count yourself lucky that it was the sunroof seal, not the mechanism cable. New seals are available from the dealer. I think you can by a one piece seal or else a 2 piece. Go for the 2 piece as its easier to fit. They are expensive though. Got a new set a few months ago but still haven't had the chance to fit.
