Topic: 318is Newbie Posted: 27-November-2004 at 15:26 |
Hi all, new to the world of BMW having just purchased a 1998 318is in burgandy.
Very impressed with the car especially as it is totally and I really mean totally unmarked both inside and out with 90k and a full BMW service history, even all the tools, first aid box and warning triangle are there! Build quality is superb and it drives just like a new one would have (or I think so anyway)
right thats me just really saying helle as wife is sick to death of me ranting about how clean etc the BMW is.

Very pleased with the 318is Coupe so much better than my 1999 Honda Civic that I did a straight swap for at a local dealer!
BMW was up for 5995, my Honda was the VTEC ES mode with 38k on the clock bit rattly and noisy. Think I got a cracking deal any views?
Any idea what sort of MPG I should expect on a daily 60mile round trip commute to and from work on motorway sitting at 70mph?
Also what difference would a aftermarket air filter make to performance and economy and sound?

i found a K&N panel filter flattened out a flat spot for me, coouldn't tell you about induction kits though. mine will roughly do 350-380 miles to a tank, mixed miles and dodgy driving. Bm's just love motorways though.

Should get around 40mpg combined. depends on how much town driving is involved.
My 318ti gives around 40mpg so it should be the same. Just reset the little computer, flick through the menu (using switch on end of blinker stalk) I found out all these little things from playing around, I don't know if the mormal coupe is the same as the compact, but the windows close if you leave the key in the locked position in the door as well (just lock and hold for a few seconds) I didn't know this till I read about it on an American ti site.
Sounds like you have a good car there mate..

..why have you run out of blusher?
yep, a E36/5 '95 compact. Basically a 318is coupe, with the back shortened by 8 inches, and E30 rear suspension to lighten it (not the multi-link stuff on usual E36's)
Same 140bhp engine as well.
as Praktisk would probably say, like the brown end off a stick..

Welcome to the site, great cars 318iS, had 3 models before the M, a 1993 1.8, a '99 1.9 then a 'tweaked' '97 1.9 which had 17" Alpinas, PiperX induction kit,M3 front bumper and white light kit.
If you're looking at induction kits the later 1.9 engine proves a bit difficult to find 1s that fit, or it was difficult when I got 1-in the end I got PiperX to make one for me.
Photos of the induction kit etc can be found by clicking on the M3 link in my sig below.
