Hello, This is my first time visiting this site. Very well done. As the family gearhead, I've been elected to troubleshoot the above mentioned car. It's a rust free specimen with 140K miles. It won't crank, nor will the cluster power up when the key is turned. The battery is nearly new and charged up. I have only an aftermarket Chilton manual to use, no Bentley. I've not yet began to work on the car but I'm hoping to go armed with a list of things to check, pattern failures, etc. I've been tinkering cars for 25 years and have good troubleshooting skills. Any suggestions/ideas would be greatly appreciated. I believe the old saying "not one of us is as smart as all of us". Thanks in advance to those who have been down this road before and can save us some time by sharing their experiences.

Wrung out the wiring, faulty ignition switch. $29 and it's back in shape. In case anyone is interested.

It sounds like i've got a similar problem with a '91 320i -- its turning over, but no spark. There's no juice to the coil or distributor, so I'm guessing it must be upstream. Maybe the ignition switch. Does this sound similar to you're problem.

How much of a job is it to replace the ignition?
