Dear all

I wonder whether you can help me out. I bought two weeks ago a used 04 (8 months old) BMW 318 SE (E46) and I am very happy with my purchase,

However driving the car is not an enjoyment as the steering feedback is bad and the car steers and I have to correct.

The car came with 17 inch wheels (low profile Michelin pilot), the tyre pressures are (Front 2.0 Bar, 29 psi) and (Rear 2.3 Bar, 33 psi) as recommended by the bmw.

I think it might be something to do with the tyre pressures! As I don't think it needs 4 wheel alignment and wheel balancing, although am not sure and this is my first BMW.

Can you please HELP and do you recommend different tyre pressures!!!.

Thanks in Advance.

First of all an 8 month old BMW shouldn't need 4 wheel alignment unless it has had some work done on the suspension, which it shouldn't have at that age and even if it had BMW would have realigned the suspension after anyway. Unless of course the car had hit a curb or two.

The tyre pressures that you mentioned are the same as they recommend for my car which is on 16's. I have found that increasing the front to 34 and the back to about 36 gives me sharper handling.

To some extent the steering that you describe, or tramlining as it is also known, where the cars tries to follow the camber of the road, is a problem that BMWs suffer from. I found that fitting non-directional tyres helped out a lot with this problem, but other than that all I can say is that you will get used to it.

If you are concerned you could take it back to the dealer where you bought it and ask them whether it should feel like it does.

Peter

Thank you very much for your advice, I'll try to increase the tyre pressures and see if there is any difference in terms of steering feedback.

Thanks again

I agree with Peter, I also increase the pressures and find the feedback much improved.

Hi Guys

I have increased the tyre pressure as peter suggested but there is no difference.

I have taken the car to the BMW dealer and one of their technicians test drove the car with me and he said the car not feeling right and it might need KDS but haven't got the time to do today but he checked underneath the suspensions and steering are both fine.

My way to home I went to ATS tyre place and asked 4 their free 4 wheel laser alignment and found out that my BMW is T/out 1mm instead of T/in 1.8mm. Therefore it is out of alignment 2.8mm.

The car is going back to BMW dealer tomorrow for full KDS (a whopping £250) and found out that is not covered by the warranty although I only had this car for 3 weeks!

I let you know how I get on.

Thanks guys

bye
