clarkson was getting a slating there.  poor show.  i say clarkson for pm.  let him sort out the countries scum. - and there are lots of them!

this appears to be quite a topic of discussion and like any other everybody has a valid opinion but personally they are not for me.  20K could buy you a damn good E46 coupe (2nd hand).  save up a few more pennies and get an E46 M3 (2nd hand).  then your really talkin' fun.  but 20k is just so much money for a bigish hatch back.

I'm interested to hear everybody elses opinion though....

But he does deserve a slating every now and then, especially when he shoots his mouth off. Clarkson for PM!!! a_smil17

You could say the same for any car though. Why buy a brand new E46 M3 when for the same cash you could get a good second hand Ferrari 355 or 911 turbo.

The price is a bit much but you're paying for the badge. It's still cheaper than a 316i.

Did anyone see top gear last night? There don't like the 1 series and I have to say I couldn't think of a counter argument to anything they said. Expensive, not very practical etc. This would be ok for a sports car, but not good for a family hatch intended to compete with the Golf, Astra, Focus etc.

But BMWs are always expensive compared to their rivals, and never as practical a choice...

rigorous quality standards?

if they were built as well as the myth perpetuates then they wouldnt be getting slagged for dubious quality of materials used in production

my e36 interior trim was of more durable quality than the e46s is, and i dare say the e30s was a step forward again

"never mind the quality feel the width" has never been more apt

every car manufacturer uses cheap materials in there line, its the only way to try and be competitive

whilst the materials may be cheap and nasty the quality of the build is solid and hard wearing

i'll bet they never pulled off any plastic trim during the review

just because its cheap materials that are used does not mean that the quality is any less, remember companies like Skoda and Hyundai have some of the highest quality stds in the world

Yes but in order to compete directly the I series needs to be. If you have kids you are not going to buy a car that has a small boot and a cramped back seat no matter how stylish/cool it is. In this sector a lot of the buyers don't have the luxury of choosing an impractical car.

And as for build quality, IMHO BMW now lag behind a lot of cheaper car manufacturers, especially the Japanese.

BMW have been buidling a decent 3 door hatchback since'95, can't fault mine. loads of room in back with seats folded, the only downside to it is a bit of wind noise and the common no leg room in the back. But since there are only 2 of us, rear legroom was on the bottom of the list.

Think I agree with Stephen, my old E30's interior was built solid, the E36 isn't bad, have seen the interior of an E46 compact and I hate it.

Saw an Alfa hatchback the other day parked outside my neighbours, I mistook it for the new one series (saw a glimpse of the side)
