oil change on 740 e38

   has anyone had a problem with putting 5w30 fully synthetic oil in a 740 v8.
since the change it ticks for about 1 min after starting and when gets warm a slight knock from engine and you can still hear the tick noise.
have now replaced oil with 10w40 semi-synthetic but still has the same problem.
the car was fine until the oil change.
what sort of damage has been done to engine?????
any info would be helpful.
