After refuelling my 1 series I got into the car and inserted the keyfob and pressed the start button as usual. However while the dashboard display was going through its switch on procedure (briefly showing the service interval) I pressed the reset button to reset the trip computer. Now the Oil service interval indicator is showing 0 and the oil symbol is red. It appears as though I have reset this indicator accidentially. Is there anyway of rectifying the situation?

Im relatively unfamiliar with these motors but are you sure that the indicator wasn't going to change anyway? Would it be due an oil service now?

A dealer probably has to reset this though. Is there not 5 years/100k free servicing on UK BMWs?

Oh, I'd remove the email address from your signature - spammers can collect it there (they can't get emails listed in peoples profile without first becomming forum members)

I heard a story from a neighbour of mine who is a mechanic who reckons he has re-set BMW and Merc service indicators by doing similar to what Dave in the 1 Series has done.

He reckons switching on the ignition while pressing the trip reset stick in certain ways and combinations, like length of time you hold the ignition on for or length of time you hold the trip reset stick will do some strange things to the on board service indicators.

It's a bit like pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete to reset the computer when it inevitably crashes.  Our IT dept swears by those three keys!

When is the 1 series forum starting on this site?

After a quick trip to my local dealer mine is now back to normal. the technician admitted that he could not explain what had happened - there is a (quite complicated) manual reset procedure but this could not occur by accident. It does seem as though me pressing the reset switch while the computer was going through its switch on routine has highlighted a possible glitch in the software.

I agree it's about time for a 1 series forum. Its a fabulous car (my first BMW), just slightly underpowered compared to my previous car (MG ZR 160). However I'm already eagerly looking forwrad to more details of the 125 Sport.
