My Series 1 1981 635 CSi got its first serious drive today after the new shocks and springs and bushes and various other bits and pieces.
Very impressed with the handling and roadholding in general, although I did find I needed to be "on it" a bit more than most of my other cars to get the best feel out of the 6er. Is that normal -- that you have to cane the 6er quite hard to get it to feel sharp? Main question is this: gear lever throw is long -- far too long! -- is there a short shift kit for the Series 1 6er manual? |

-I think others for later 5 series (E28) will also fit, but I am not certain. That would be my starting point anyway. cheers

The pre-May '82 635 developed its peak torque figure at either 5200 or 5800 rpm (can't remember off the top of my head which figure it is). Anything built after that developed max. torque at about 4800 rpm. This may explain why you feel you have to cane yours.... |

I believe that a Z3 1.9 gear lever will fit all BMW five speed manuals and improves the throw. I fitted one to the E30 M3, but to be honest, I didn't think it was that much better, but other swear by it as the best mod £ for £ possible. I don't know if it would fit a 4 speeder, but there's a right good chance and it's not a particularly dear part. |

Ta. I actually have a 5-speed, but it's not a dogleg. Don't know what the provenance could be....

I have a short shift on my car. The throw is about 40% less. This is achieved by shortening on end of the lever and lengthening the other end. Ross tried mine and wants it for his M. However there is a danger that the other lengthened end of the lever below the fulcrum can hit the prop, which it did on my car. I have however had the prop guard which does nothing removed and the problem is solved. The Z3 lever is what i have, but i know motormec does an adjustable kit that costs around £200. James |

I'm pretty sure the Z3 lever fits all five speeds dogleg or not - the Z3 is not a dogleg box.

I have UUC shortshift on my M635. Picked up from www.findit.com for £60. I have short arms and longish legs!! so the throw was a particular problem to me. Reduction in throw is massive, say around 40% as an estimate and makes gear changes a lot easier. Reverse is particularly better as it was way over to the left for my liking. You perhaps need to change the knuckle joint in the gear lever as well as this wears making for a sloppy change - £15 from BMW. Motormec do the one I went for Ian |

Hi Ian, Forgive my stupidity, but I really know nothing about mechanicals: there are 11 different options marked "01" -- I can't really see which one I should get? |

Most of those at number "1" have ended so it ain't any of them. Two of them are for the bent selector rod - so check if you have this. This leaves you with actually two part numbers to go for. I would edge towards the one ending in 309 if you have a straight selector rod. When ordering your BMW agent should be able to confirm anyway. Ian
