Mark's car is X regd so I think it will have a 3HP22 not a 4 speeder.

Perhap's Mark will take the Red Baron to an auto box garage to get the problem diagnosed.

Keep us posted Mark

You sure you're not after those arches as well, Philip.
If you've got it, a lorry brought it.

I had them on my 728i Dave (fitted by prev owner honest). one day one chrome arch fell off somewhere down the M3, as the metal underneath had completely rotted away. the other 3 chromes simply pulled off taking the rotten arch remains with them.

I hate chrome arches

Must admit, I quite like the look of them ( I just like chrome ), but wouldn't buy a car with them fitted.

a, youl have to fight me off not going to scrap the car even if it costs me more that its werth.gear box has beed good at the moment. Its a 3 speed box so don't know haw much werk it would tack to fit a 4 speeder. I do know I would have to change the prop and gear salecter. have had quote for 1200 for rebild so if this is the only way to fix the problom so be it, and yes I know I would be wasting good money on car that aint werth a bag of chips, but I DO NOT CARE as the car is sound on the underside and is my pride a joy all the same. Thanks to some of you as it gives me more confidence and advice of what to do I hope I can do the same at some point, some people can be quight nasty, even thow they my be right in a small way.

Mark,

Good for you sir,

perhaps you will find a 3 speed box for sale and keep it ready for the day when your box finally packs in.

I recently defied all logic and paid to have an old 735i renovated. it cost a packet for sure, but I wanted to do it, so I did.

Modern BMs don't push any buttons for me. maybe cars have to be 20 year old heaps of rust before I rate them.

We're just old nutters who like E23's, so nuts to all the moaners.

I love old cars, had an old d reg Bedford camper van auto at work one of the ones with the doors that slide open and you can drive like, took to be quoted for welding and no mater how bad it is it put a huge smile on my face and I just could not get rid of it. It was just fun to drive because it was so bad but loveable all in one and with the doors slid open and on a suney day like to today. well what can I say.

hi mark only joking with you,a second hand box should be easy to find, easy to fit as well.keep the car original, fit the 3 speed. if you start upgrading it it wont be classed as a original if you decide to show it. im suprized it has lasted that long 170,000miles not bad for a auto box.

There is a guy who frequents some of the BMW forums who is based in Nottingham, who goes by the name of "Box Doctor", he specialises in repairing/rebuilding BMW gear boxes, apparently his prices are VERY reasonable and his service is exceptional. He had a feature in one of the BMW mags a year or so ago. If you want his number let me know!

hi mark yes, ive fitted lots of boxes mostly granada cosworths,im not sure what box your car shares but andy boy would know.as he is bmw mad.the only box i fitted on a bmw was a auto box on a e28 525 but i changed it to a manual box from a 635 5 speed, i think you would be able to fit a auto box from the e28 range but check with andyboy on years etc. i know the bellhousing would be the same but not sure about the gearbox pressure pipes etc.
