Setting up a VPN for the first time on windows 2000 small business server, set up a test client connection (on XP Pro SP2) with both PP2P and L2TP, think ive done everything required at the server end, forwarding relevant ports etc.

the client connects, gets to verifying username/password and after about 30 seconds rejects with "error 721 - the remote computer did not respond"

the router being used, a d-link dsl604+, supports "vpn passthrough" but the manual doesnt go into any detail, reviews of the 604+ say that it only supports connection to a vpn client

can anyone recommend any home/small office routers with proper VPN support or give me any pointers?

Are you sure that your ISP can handle DSL?  There may be a higher tariff on DSL and you may need to use a different dial up number to get service. i.e. upgrade.

The usual sequence of events, as I understand it, is that the host system answers, the systems should negotiate the speed they will talk at and then you should be challenged for users id and password.  If there is a discrepancy between the speed negotiated and the contract associated with the contract you have it may kick you out.

Check back with your ISP.

Both the companies ISP (abel internet) and my ISP (freeserve) are on 1mb ADSL connections, company is on static ip address, no problem with "PCanywhere" connections over tcp/ip

sorry I only just saw this post.

Hey stephen I have a zoom router at home and I use Cisco VPN client to connect to my work.  Maybe email me at my home account and see if we can get it sorted.

Cheers

This may help you. http://www.chicagotech.net/vpnsetup.htm#Summary

Let me know when you get this going as I will be looking at doing the same in the near future.
