    Posted: 12-February-2005 at 12:49

I'm a recent new owner of a 1985 316. Having problems with cold starts. The car has been converted to a Weber carb. and manual choke by the previous owner, and I've added a new BMW battery. Until the temp. guage indicates full warm up, the car sputters even as I adjust the choke. The fuel mix was too rich and had it adjusted. Any other suggestions from members who have experienced the same? Any solutions ? Much appreciated!

The classic way to use a Weber on a cold engine is to give it a couple of pumps on the accelerator and start it with no choke.

Ofcourse, you may have an air leak causing a lean mixture.

I had the same setup, when you stop the car try stalling it with the choke, then when starting pull choke halfway out.

I had lots of trouble staring mine on a cold morning, judicious use of choke, only pushing fully in when fully warm.

All good fun

btw, there was no way it would start on a cold morning with the choke fully in, maybe in summer.

Those Weber replacements are rubbish. They're
made by Webcon for about 56 pence in China and
never worked very well. In cold weather, one trick
was to reroute the air intake using a length of flexy
tubing so that it picks up hot air off the exhaust
manifold all the time - this prevents carb icing.
If you can find one, a Solex in good cond. from an old
2002 (or an E21 320/316) with the manifold goes
straight on. On a 316 I had years ago, I replaced the
Webcon this with a Weber 32/36 from a 2 litre
Cortina, plumbed in the auto choke and it worked
like a charm.

Yup.. the 32/36 is a cracker.

I thought that this was the standard replacement for many different carbs on many different cars.. can't say I have ever come across this nasty Webcon device you mention.

A service kit for a 32/36 is not so expensive and has everything you need to rebuild them and get them working correctly.

Here's where I betray my age!

The Weber 32/36DCD was standard fit in the 1963 Ford Cortina 1500GT. The advantage of this carb was that just about every jet and choke was replaceable so that within reason, it could be set up for just about any engine between 1300 and 2000cc.

Because of this versatility, and the fact that it was a good basic design, it was popular for more than a decade. However, I have to say tht anything in a scrapyard would be well knackered by now. Large capacity Fords used Weber carbs of various types for a long time, including the higher powered 2ltr Pintos and the Essex V6. Some of these have proved to be a reasonable fit for other motors, too.

Edit: I do talk rubbish, sometimes! I was thinking of the 28/36DCD. The 32/36DGAS and its relatives are the ones off the Pintos and V6 engines.

Thanks for all the great recommendations. I will try to work with the Weber carb. first as the old Solex was a dog and a fresh replacement is hard to find. It appears that working with the choke gets the car started. Just a matter of keeping it going without flooding out with a rich mixture. Hate having to let it stand idle for 15 minutes to get the car to warm each morning, but it seems from all the suggestions, that I may have no other option. Spoiled by many years of Bosch fuel injection!

Cheers

Ooooh no it isn't. The 1500GT Cortina used the
28/36DCD !!. The 32/36 was used on
1600GT and 2 litre Pintos. Honest.
All the Weber replacement carbs are made by
Webcon which is a Weber subsidiary but they are
badged as Weber. Nastiness all round.
