Blimey AG! Is there a Demolition Derby for late model BMWs? Do your M3 go to one of these places? |

What I find amusing is how quickly some of the new models end up in the dismantlers.....

-yeah, depending on how you work it out, the 'average' life of a new car is now very short. 50% of them are written off after about three years!!! cheers

Also what is interesting is how many new models are written off with fire damage. How good and relaible are the electric systems? |

I guess, a lot more electrical gizmos, packed into a tighter space (modern engines always seem very tightly packed), coupled with lots of plastics means that any sort of underbonnet fire is going to be expensive. Then, I suppose, the high price of spares and labour, compared to the low relative price of second hand cars these days makes them uneconomic to repair. I think, as has been alluded to on elsewhere on these forums in the past, there's going to be some pretty cheap motors around in about 10 years or so because they need some relatively simple work done which is simply not "worth" doing. I mean, I have enough trouble with a 635, imagine trying to DIY a new 5,6, or 7 series?? |

I did notice the amount of relatively new cars that had suffered engine fires - yikes. That is extremely concerning when you drive a much older car with the carb above the exhaust manifold! Drip...drip...drip....WHUMF. Oops.
