After driving around town today i noticed a squeal noise appearing under acceleration, when the car is at idle its fine,  i got out the car and lifted the bonnet, when i give it a bit of throttle it sounds like the belt at the front is squealing, the belt seems tight enough though, i gave the pulleys a coating of wd 40, but the problem is still there, i cant say for sure its the belt but what else could it be?? Everything else is fine with the car, running really sweet apart from the squeal which ruins the drive. I went back out in it this evening and everything was fine, no noise but i know its going to come back , any ideas.???????

I wouldnt advise you to spray pulleys with wd40, the belts are supposed to follow the pulley in regards to speed, they squeal when they are not doing so, if the belt isnt loose, then its probably gone hard, you will make the problem worse by spraying the pulleys, a bit like oiling the brakes if they squeal, only not as dangerous

I imagine this belt is driving the alternator at the very least, if the pulley belt hasnt gone hard, isnt loose, then whatever it is driving has increased in load, dry bearings etc

Best Wishes

Nigel

Could also be a failing water pump - but a new fanor p/s belt is a cheaper place to start. I agree about not putting WD40 on drive belts - they need friction to run!
