Hi all! Why is my car (early '90 M20'd 520) not fitted
with an o2 sensor? It seems to be a very important
part on other models fitted with Motronic ECU's. If the
Motronic unit needs an o2 sensor input, then surely
the lack of one will richen the mixture? Just a
thought!

Cheers,

Shaun

Oxygen sensors were only usually fitted to Motronic systems when a catalytic converter is present. This is mainly to protect the catalyst from under/ overfuelling.
The Motronic without oxygen sensor uses a pre programmed map of values to run the engine, instead of relying on the lambda signal.

Thanks for that Steve. So does that mean a M20'd
525 of a similar age also has no O2 sensor? Any
idea if a cat was ever fitted to an E34 M20 block in
the UK?

Cheers,

Shaun

According to the ETK catalytic converters were available on all E34's from 1987...
