Hi everyone,

(First time poster, be gentle...) I've newly acquired an E39 540 (50k, 98R). It's a beaut, and runs like a charm -sh*t off a stick and all that...

Anyway, thing is, when it's cold and in Neutral (it might do this when warm too, but I've never tried) -if I rev it to like 4 - 5k, then lift-off sharpish, the exhaust pops like a rally car!

I was just wondering if anybody else had come accross this and if it has any significance? (Car's got an untouched 4.4 V8 with standard exhaust.)

Cheers,

normally just the unburned fuel leaving down the exhaust system as you let off, well in a rally car it is, i wouldn't have called it a problem bearing in mind you have a big v8 lump its gunna have a lot of fuel about.

Man your crazy reving your in neutral/park and when its cold! its bad for the gearbox and engine to rev it without load!

If it does pop its just unburned fuel being exited in the exhaust manifold since the manifold gets hot fast, it will ignite and pop.

However doesn't mean a thing but I would advise to get your mixture checked from a proper bosch agent just to double check from cold to normal running temperature!

Goodness me fellas,

I'd have hoped the old beemer  set-up was a little more robust than your frightening replies suggest...

..not to worry though, for those of you who winced at my tale of cold rev popping, I only did it a couple o' times anyway.

(Novelty since wore off!)

Cheers,
