Got a bit of a problem, When i engage reverse my lights don't always come on, sometimes one comes (could be either side).

What could the problem be? is a big job?

Please help

I assume you checked the bulbs are OK?

Worth checking the contact on you rear light units and maybe giving them a wee clean?

I don't think it'll be the microswitch that trips when reverse is engaged otherwise you would be getting both lights intermittently rather either light intermittently...

I agree check all the bulb contacts first, I had an E30 325 that was always giving me trouble after a long journey in the wet. The water would get into the light cluster and all my rear lights would go haywire for a short time.

Thank You all for your advice, will check it out when i finish work.

by the way i'm thinking of upgrading to an e36 325i coupe or e30 325i sports, what do you think? i have an e30 320i se and it won't be easy to part with, i love it, its pristine condition. the only reason why is that i want a bit more power.  is there anyway for me to make my car as quick as the 325's or would i be better of changing?

Upgrade route would likely be more trouble than it's worth. Sort out a nice 323/5/8 from the E36 era and you should satisfy the need for more power :-)

There goes my rep again  2nd time someones typed that!

As to the E36 vs E30 question I think that's all down to personal preference. For me I'd go E36 simply because it's more modern and decent E30s appear to be getting harder to find.

Nah buy yourself a decent low mileage e30 and you'll love it.  But down to your taste, e36 is a little bulky for my liking.
