Hi there,

New to the forum & the car (for now)...

I'm buying an E30 325i Convertible from a friend and trying to agree a price (never easy - friends & money don't mix!). He's asking £4,000, but I think he's £500 - maybe as much as £1,000 over the top. Can anyone help guide me please? The car is....

1990 H reg, 325i Sport convertible, switchable automatic, diamond black, black leather, absolutely spotless with 58,000 genuine miles on the clock. It has full BMW service history and 2 careful owners from new. He's just had a full engine rebuild and the hood was replaced about 18 months ago. No aircon or electric hood. Um... that's about it. It is spotless. I already said that.

Any help would be really greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

Hello and welcome,

To begin with, there is no such thing as a 325i Sport Convertible, there are some very rare motorsport convertibles but it is not one of those as they only came in three colours and black wasn't one of them.   So I will assume it is a 325i Convertible.
Being honest it sounds like he may £500 to £1k too cheap !  A convertible in mint condition with this history, mileage and number of owners is going to be a very rare find, you have to remember how old these things are now !

I think if its as good as it sounds and you get it for 4K you have done pretty well mate, particularly as we head into spring...!

Good luck with it

Cheers Mark. That's really helpful (and reasuring!).

I'm new to the E30 game so forgive the 'Sport' mistake!

It has the same front end, side skirts and wheels as your (immaculate and particularly cool) car with M Sport badging on the steering wheel. It also has a switchable auto gear box with a sport mode. Thus I thought it was a 'Sport'.

Either way it drives brilliantly for a car of its age, goes like stink and the engine sounds as smooth as...

So I guess I'm getting a good price!

Thanks again.

No probs mate - didn't mean to sound pompous

Lots of people ask me if mine is an M3 lol

It sounds like a sweet car you are getting though.  Those switchable autos are nice too.

Thanks for the comments!

I agree with Mark thats a good price for a convertable it sounds in good condition to. In a couple of months time when the weather is better it will cost you more. I have been keeping an eye on the E30 prices and the average price on a 325i convertable is £4950.
Hope you have purchased the car if so welcome to the world of the E30

The deal is done!!

He knocked himself down to £3,750 because the stereo head unit needs replacing.

Bargain! Just got to clear some junk from my garage to make room for it. Pick up next weekend.

Very happy! Especially after your reassurances. So thanks again.

Now you'll have to put up with my inane and niave questions on an ongoing basis!

Sweet deal!  The price is nice and if the car is as nice as it sounds from your description then you'll have loads of fun with it.

Just wondering if you know anything aboout why it needed an engine rebuild at this kind of mileage?

Now: BMW 523i SE '00, 318i SE - e91 '07, 325i Coupe '93.

Prev:
e46 328i SE Touring, 330Ci, 318Ci.
e39 523i SE.

Not sure about why the engine rebuild. My mate has a bit more money than sense I think! I know it had a bad oil leak, but not sure why he went for a rebuild. The car belonged to his son who emigrated to New Zealand. They wouldn't let the car in the country so he sold it to his dad. He didn't use it so it's been sitting in the garage. Then it started leaking. He took it to his local dealer and threw money at the problem.

All sorted now and drives great.

I'll get some pictures once I've given it a good polish!

And yes I play the guitar Chris. Not very well though. Not very well at all.

At £3750 you've done very well. I have an 89 "F" chrome bumper 325 convertible that I purchased about a year ago. Totally original with a very comprehensive history (102k up) with Indigo Leather and new blue hood it needed work. I paid a mere £2900 for it but have since spent nearly a grand on it bringing up to scratch. I reckon, realistically it's probably worth £4k now.

Yours is a better colour (mines white / blue hood), lower mileage with full bmw hist and only 2 owners. If it's as mint as you say I'd put it at £4750 to £5k ALL day long. Prices for original nice standard convertibles are definately on the up. I saw an exceptional one advertised the other day (a 325) at £6500, I think in classic and sportscar mag. Keep it standard / nice and you'll return your money plus interest in the future. They won't stay this cheap for ever.

Welcome to e30 convertible ownership. You'll love it!

Regards

Trevor

That is a bargain!! Well done! To have that sort of mileage, leather, and the M-tech kit and all in a convertible, is a very good price indeed! Hope you enjoy, no doubt you will!!

With regards to the engine, it could have just been one of those things, especially with some low mileage cars, I've found that cars that haven't been stored correctly when not in use seem to sound worse than other more regulary used cars, these cars in my opinion need to be used at least every weekend
