Belt Tightener

   I've had an off/on problem with my 318tds (96). It seems that when the engine heats up and in slow traffic, the automatic belt tightener slips and becomes loose causing an unpleasant noise at low revs especially when the power steering is used. If left to cool down, it's fine and the belt is tight. This was first noticed after an oil change, occurred off and on for a few weeks, I had the tightner replaced but no change.(The garage seemed at a loss even though a BMW specialist!). Then it stopped for 6 months, just had a service and oil change and guess what, yes it's happening again. Is it an oil type problem? or something else,
               Any help much appreciated,
