I'm interested to know how a practically invisible and unseen camera can cut accident rates by 50%. Anybody got any ideas?

Simple, the reaction of an observant driver who spots the camera and brakes hard, causes a chain reaction, all following drivers brake hard causing the common motorway "snake effect" whereby traffic then becomes static - result = no accidents.... Then we all get fedup, sell our cars and travel by bus... Or am I wrong?! Cheers, Bryce. |

This is a wonderful idea devised by the transport genuises who brought
you congestion charging and motorway bus lanes. I ventured onto the M8
today, my first time on a motorway for about two months - I avoid them
if I can and take A roads. For every mile I drove I must have checked
my speedo at least twice, and I was on the motorway for roughly 20
miles. So assume I checked my speed 40 times in that journey, with each
check taking say one second. During that second my car will have
travelled roughly 35 yards, meaning that for my total journey I will
have had my eyes off the road for 1400 yards, or almost 0.8 miles. This
equates to almost 5% of my journey spent with my eye off the road and
on the speedo to ensure I don't creep into the danger area. It was
probably actually more, I have quoted low to make it sound more
plausible as i didn't actually believe it myself.
With these new stealth cameras people will be crapping themselves about coming through the other side with an average of 80.6 mph, so will spend every available second watching the speedo. Fine if you have cruise control, but not so good if you don't. People argue 'don't speed and you have nothing to worry about', but of course we all know how easy it is to creep up to 80 without noticing. The traffic enforcement bodies in this country have road safety all back to front, they blame speed when it is basic driver skills and training that are lacking. Sure, great stick cameras in to make money, but everyone is driving along at 70.00 mph with both eyes firmly lodged on the speedo needle oblivious to what is going on around them. Expect the accident rate to suddenly increase, and sadly at motorway speeds they will be nasty ones. |
