Ooooh yes!! About four times as much. This is why
you don't see eighties BMW's on the road much now,
i,e E28, E23, 6 Series etc. As soon as cats became
mandatory, they just dropped in valuye like a stone
as did the W123 Mercedes, Opel Rekord/Senator
etc. But as soon as the Berlin wall fell, there was
suddenly an huge market for cast off's. From a
Wartburg to a 1984 520i Auto was a huge step up
the ladder. Then when the East Germans started to
buy more and more new cars as their wealth
increased, these cars move further East into Poland,
Latvia, Romania, Bulgaria, Belorus, Ukraine,
Macedonia etc etc. Nothing that ran and drove was
thrown away. In Berlin there are huge compounds
filled with old cars waiting to go East. In Hamburg
are huge yards by the docks filled with old cars
waiting to go to Africa. This is why there are so few
scrap yards in Germany.
All along the road from Berlin to Poland are
transporters filled with old cars.

Horsetan - yes you're right about toilet humour. But
who is first on the beach with the stripey towels eh?!

P.S - anyone know how to reset an Apple mac so
that the column is not so narrow? It's giving me a
headache trying to read.

Von Paulos

How do you get on in Germany, if like me you have a pre-cat E34 ?

Are you allowed to fit an aftermarket cat and get the tax reduction ?

Only interested, as its bound to be the same here eventually.

Best Wishes

Nigel

Yes, you can buy catalyst kits for about 400 Euros
(270 pounds - ish) and fit them. Because all the
E34's, E32's and later E30's were cat prepared (the
ECU is ready set for all of them and the lambda
probe plug is in the engine bay) all you have to do is
fit them. I think they are a straight replacement for the
centre box, or you get a garage to cut a section of
pipe out and weld the catalyst in. With a working
catalyst (katalysator) you get the cheaper road tax. A
cat car is identifoed by a different AU sticker on the
number plates. You can get catalysts for Beetles and
all sorts of old stuff.
The exception is historic cars, i.e those made 30
years ago (I think this is a rolling date). These are
identified by an 'H" in the number plate, i.e HH:TY
1234H.
All race cars must have a catalyst also!

The lack of a catalyst is partly the reason a lot of E30
M3's came to Britain. Only the Sport Evolution had
one as standard along with some of the late 2.3 cars
(215 bhp) but the older ones didn't. This is in the mid
nineties when fitting a Cat cost a fortune so the cars
dropped in value. The same applies to pre 1989
Porsche 911's.
