Does anyone have the standard spec for the above model? I'm thinking of buying one to replace my 540i (same engine but much nicer and I don't need the practicality!) but I can't find much info on UK specs. A link to a scanned brochure or similar would be ideal.

Cheers
Paul.

Hi Ian, thanks that is very useful. Germany spec which I expect is pretty close to UK but I guess there are some differences - I'll ask the seller for details of exactly what is included before going further.

Do these cars suffer from any of the 540i E34 traits? Such as the thrust arm bushes wearing out quickly causing shimmy at 55-60MPH? Or the wiper mechanism getting slack causing the wiper arm to hit the bonnet?

Cheers
Paul.

Hi Paul, Euro spec E31s are very close.  Its only the USA spec ones which were different (less options, dodgy headlights etc).  Have a look at e31.net & e31faq.com too, that may help.

Well considering I replaced my thrust arm bushings 2 weeks ago...I would have to answer yes. But remember these cars are quite heavy, have immensely powerful brakes so the forces going through these bushings when you push hard is pretty big.

Re the wiper arms, not familiar with that problem. I don't know if the 540's do this but the E31's wipers retract under the lip of the bonnet when not in use to reduce drag so they don't really have a chance to hit the bonnet when in use. I have heard the mechanism which increase the wiper force against the glass when you reach higher speeds can need adjustment.

One problem at the moment is filling the 91 litre tank with Optimax..ouch.

Let me know if you have any more Q's!

Ian

Thanks Ian, that's great. Seems the wipers won't be a problem, on the E34 they park *just* above the bonnet so any play in the mechanism as it wears allows them to hit the bonnet - poor design IMO. Mine has that pressure adjust thing and I find it pretty poor, maybe due to poor wiper design in the first place. My old Audi's wipers performed much better at all speeds with just a plain ordinary setup.

Seems the bushes will be an issue though, oh well I can live with that if it's the only major bugbear.

Not looking forward to filling it up though! Optimax is around 90p/l here, sometimes more so you're looking at least £80 to fill up. About US$150. Still the economy shouldn't be any worse than my 540.

Cheers
Paul.

One thing I forgot to ask: Does the 840Ci have a clutch delay valve (CDV), and if so is it easy to remove? My 540i has one and it's horrid, really spoils the driving experience and can actually cause the clutch to slip if you're accelerating hard going through the gears. Nice of them to assume we're all hopeless at shifting without damaging the transmission, I seem to have done fine with all my other cars!

Thanks.
