Sounds like microswitch moved out of position at hinge mechinism or break in wire at critical point.  Can be adjusted by couple of 2.5 mm allen screws.

I have a 96 320i Conv with a power hood. After the down button is pressed, the front of the hood lifts, the rear cover lifts, the front of the hood stops retracting when it's almost vertical. A gentle "push" to the front of the hood helps and the whole thing retracts into place.  I'm getting a bit frustrated with having to give the front of the hood a push. Local BMW dealer suspects it's a weak motor however I'm not buying that as I think that something somewhere needs adjusting. Battery is in good condition and the engine is always running when retracting so there should be plenty of power to support the mechanism. Does anyone have any ideas??
