hi guys,
planning to drive from belfast to italy in baur 320. Firstly am i mad?! secondly, what kind of advice can some of the seasoned travellers offer? i've never done a european trip but i've done some homework and know about bulbs, triangles etc... so i'm not too concerned about that  stuff or speeding (i don't think the baur is a speed machine!). I''ll get a general service done before, but i'm Just looking some good everday advice about preparing for unexpected mishaps,  running repairs to expect or tools that are a definite must on such a long trip. Has anyone done Italy before?? thanks
guys

I did used to drive an artic through from Calais to Trieste occasional and that was interesting. I drove a 1988 reg n/a Supra from the Isle of Wight to Munich and back in 2001 which was incredible fun.

Personally I don't see there being any problems for you driving over there. I found European drivers on the whole to be courteous and once you get the hang of driving the wrong side of a roundabout, you will be fine. The Italians do live up to the reputation of being headcases behind the wheel but nothing worse than any major city elsewhere.

Best thing to do is do your homework about a route and learn a little of the language..enough to get you out of trouble..and you should be OK. I agree that servicing the car is a good idea and take a few spares with you too, fanbelts etc, just incase.

Enjoy the trip, relax and don't try to keep up with everyone else and make sure you take regular breaks, not just for a pee but for a walk about and coffee etc. The service stations over there are excellent and no where near as expensive as they are over here.

As a footnote, my Supra was making an odd noise most of the outward and all of the homeward drive. Two weeks after getting it home discovered the crank flywheel had shattered but hadn't caused any problems over the 8k miles covered, so don't worry about your car being old or maybe not upto the journey. When you get it serviced you will be fine.

1) Get breakdown cover from one of the big boys, AA or RAC.

2), Although impolite, don't worry too much about language.

3) Make sure your insurance is ok, and you have any bailbonds in   place.

4) Get a reflective jacket in your car, this is required in some euro zones, and isn't a bad thing to carry anyway.

5) Rather obvious this one, but make sure you have a European driving licence, you'd be surprised just how many British citizens still don't.

6) If you don't have a photocard licence, make sure your passport is with you at all times

7) Carrry enough yoyo's for any on the spot fines, they don't accept plastic, and won't accept sterling cheques ( ask me how I know this one !)

8) Toll booths DO accept plastic.

9) Do fit beam benders, or adjust your headlights if you have the facility ( mine does ), our Police don't bother them, as we don't have on the spot fines, their Police may bother you, as they do have on the spot fines.

10) Do fit a GB sticker if you havent got Country ID number plates.

11) Don't have any kind of speed camera detection equipment in your vehicle, they consider this to be a very serious offence, and may actually lock you up.

Enjoy, I'm jealous, I've done loads of this stuff for work, I've always fancied doing it for pleasure, but I'll have to wait until the kids leave home.

The little blighters wouldn't sit still long enough !

Lots of good advice there Nigel, but this bit had me intrigued.  Can they not sit still for long enough to make it to the South of France or until you've finished telling them its time to leave home?!
