hi peoples i have a 1988 e34 M5  everything as been just fine with it until last weekend when i started it up and then instrument panel was not how it should be >>>> rev counter stuck on 3000 rpm although it was just ticking over, fuel gauge, temp gauge and digital millage & tripometer not working yet when i press and keep  the brake pedal on or put it in reverse the rev counter just died and fuel & temp gauge came back to life and digital counter just half lit up with a back light still no numbers, yet drive it for a mile or so and everything comes back to life as normal but the tripometer is reset back to 0.000 , now every thing works fine till i switch off, switch it back on and the problem is there again (ITS DRIVING ME MAD) ... if anyone has any ideas or if anyone knows someone i can take it to (notts mansfield area) i would be very greatful

                                        THANKS.........

Hello mate sounds like your si board batteries have given up, theres a pair of rechargable batteries that hold the memory for your service indicator when they go flat your instrument panel freaks out, hence when you,ve been driving for a while they get some charge and things go back to normal

i've never had to change them myself but if you can weild a soldering iron it should'nt pose to much of a problem apart from pulling your dash to pieces

The batteries are attached to a printed circuit board at the rear of the clocks.

Never replaced them on a e34, but you may have to remove the steering wheel, then pull out the clocks, then remove the PCB which will expose the batteries, unsolder the old batteries and replace with the same type, operating voltage must match! current rating can be higher on the new, but not lower. You can get new ones from Maplins Tandy etc.

Or in my case I rang up Varta gave them same flannel over needing some samples for a product that was to go through vibration testing.... they sent me some free! I did use to buy 5-10,000 AA batteries a time as well!

E34 M5 Uses a digital dash panel that doesn't use batteries. Sounds like a power supply problem on the dash panel. We used to repair loads of them.  Email me if you would like me to have a look.

Thanks all for the info and pointing me in the right direction , i came across this webpage >>> http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Maintenance/Electrical/Capacitors.htm       i went to maplins at notts got the capacitors at 6p each and got my soldering iron out and went to work on it  and replaced the old capacitors  in the clocks,, put the clocks back in the car and all was fine ....

cost me more in fuel than parts and repairs LOL..........
