On my way to work in the morning i come up to a crossroads where it seems you take your life in your own hands crossing it!!!!!

Because the road that runs through it is a 60MPH limit it can be a bit scary getting across it.

Who should give way to who or is it common courtesy to wait until every exit is clear???

As most morning's i find you have to wait for a space and rocket away!!!!!!!!!

Some help on this would be appreciated.

Does one road have priority?
Are there stop signs on either of the roads?
In any event (where nothing else dictates) presumably you should yield to traffic coming from your right. However, a car hurtling towards you @ 60mph can often take priority over the rules of the road!

I think the main road has right of way over side roads entering onto it, going by your description, so those in the side roads would have to wait til both directions were clear before moving out into traffic of crossing main drag.

I dare say someone will put us right though.

No stop signs and i believe that you would be right in that any car coming from the right or left doing 60mph plus would definately take priority over me!!!

Yield ?, lol interesting term, I know its used in ROI, but also the States !

Can you give me more info on the junction, draw me a picture if you want, include all roadsigns and road markings.

From the sound of things one road has a straighter run than the other.

It is also important for me to know if any of the roads has white lines down the center, and what length they are in compariaon to each other.

Killians approach sounds very good, in the event of no signs.

Does the one road actually have a 60 limit, or is it national ( which may be 60 in this case, but is different if you see what I mean).

What is the speed limit on the other road ?

Ok here we go then ..................

The road ahead of me is a national speed limit road and the road i am pulling out of is a country lane.

The junction has no signs whatsoever and does not have a yellow cross hatch in the centre of it(box junction).

I will try and post a pic in a mo....................

Country lane (you) Vs National Road(them)
Then you have to stop and wait until its clear and then cross (quickly) as they would have priority.

Its difficult to define the term country lane K, as over here most of them are national anyway, quite often a higher speed limit than the roads they join.

We don't have a sign like that.

Also, when we talk about national, I think you are talking National Roads, we don't have them either, we have A, B, & C roads, the latter rarely being signed as C.

We are talking speed limits, we have a term national speed limit, which is complicated and means different things to different vehicles.

Foe example, single carrageway road ( two lanes, one in either direction, seperated by a white painted line, broken or otherwise).

National speed limit :

Cars,motorcycles small vans = 60 mph

Vans with a max laden weight in excess of 2 tons ( transits, partners etc) = 50 mph ( this is the most broken one as people just don't realise it exists)

Vehicles over 3.5 tons (I think, don't actually have the highway code in front of me) = 40 mph.

This is why national speed limits are used, they can change the limits without changing the signs, and have multiple limits for different classes of vehicles from one sign.

The most likely sign, if it is there will be like your Yield, only it will say Give Way, a term which amuses my american chums, and they only use that in a few states when you are crossing a central reservation on a dual carrageway.

Is the image below not available but where you are approaching the major road [similar to the RoI sign]?

Our speed limits are kind of similar in theory - it is just that nobody heeds them! Doing 120km/h on motorways I get overtaken by trucks (limited to 80km/h)

Theres a whole load of signs available, I have seen that one, but its up to local councils which they use.

I haven't got my books in front of me, but the normal when on a minor road approaching a major road is give way in X yards ( can be meters now), followed by the actual give way.

The one you have shown is for people on major roads, showing them there is a cross roads ahead, but they have priority.

I doubt the map, when we get it, will actually give me enough information to answer the original question, maybe he can take a couple of pictures and post them.

If in doubt, give way !

I like some of your Irish signs, the blackspot one is a favourite.

I don't like the yellow backgrounds though, I prefer white, the same way as I don't like your yellow side marking lines on roads, white is much better.

Cheers for all your replies i was only interested as when i am at the junction you either get waved across by the driver opposite just as a car appears from the right or you get beeped from the car behind too impatient to wait and cross the junction safely!!

Wehave a similar setup locally where the Shifnal/Sheriffhales crosses the A5, it's clear there who has right of way, but at clocking off time with the A5 busy and all at speed you often get impatient drivers in the queue who won't wait for a safe opportunity to cross,

As has been said, difficult here without knowing junction, but I think I'd wait till it was clear in all directions.
