I use Heritage for my beemer, double discount after John had spoken to them, one for BMWCC membership, one for IAM.

I get £50 discount on my vectra insurance from performance direct, but it is an expensive policy, as I have it insured for work, with a milage of 50,000, and carry tools.

It is easier to get insurance discounts for IAM if you go on to become an observer, they like the fact you have to re-qualify, but like rospa.

Best Wishes

Nigel

I took my test 2 years ago, (or maybe it was 3)... I went down the route of using a local driving instructor who is IAM/ROSPA qualified. (I get an annual allowance from work to spend on sports/arts tuition - I went for a package with 8 lessons and the fee included).

My first contact with the IAM 'proper' was when I met the examiner, luckily I passed first time.

Regarding insurance, I think I get an £18 discount from Elephant which just covers the annual £15 subscription!

Heritage Insurance---0121 246 6060 offer cover for all models and classic ins for older cars. They have agreed to give Club members a 10% over and above for passing the IAM test.

I found the official IAM reccomended insurance people very unhelpful, doing favours just to talk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.NOT interested in BMW Club Scheme of holding free assessment drives outs at our driving events, which would encourage drivers to think about getting updated to, to-days road conditions.

Nostrils--thought the same!!!LHD for a "Real" experience for the assessment observer  Brings Real meaning to the word Observation eh!!.

Does is matter what car its taken in RHD or LHD! (dont want to scare the passenger on the latter!)

IAM discount is usually quoted at 10%, RoSPA Gold (graded test Gold/Silver/Bronze) is worth 15%.  However, I've never found a better price than you could get anyway; I've always had high performance cars and don't suit the risk profile that those companies look for.  If you don't drive a group 20E car then it might work for you.

Sorry if this sounds like a cliche but I enjoy advanced driving because of the increased pleasure of driving especially when I know I've done it well.  In 17 years of being an Observer, the only Associates who didn't make test grade were pushed into it by someone else.  All the others (dozens, wish I'd kept a record) passed because they wanted to be good drivers and motivated themselves.

RHD/LHD/Auto/electric/etc doesn't matter.

Good on ye John

I sat mine back in 95 (God is it really 10 years ago!)

Best thing i ever did.

My situation was funny as my observer took me out once and then he took a brain tumor (Nothing to do with me)

So believe it or not he gave me a police video and told me to teach myself,So i did.

Got in touch with the group to arrange a test and went out with someone to make sure i was ready

Sat the test a few weeks later and passed

All this chat brings back memories of my IAM days, up here in Central Scotland. After passing my test in Glasgow with Sgt. John King, I went on to become the group secretary of the Forth Valley Group in 1989 for a couple of years.

i must be getting old

cheers

Michael..

Did mine last year after Nigel suggested it. Went down to my local group did 3 runs and took the test. Took about 1 month from joining up to completing the test. My driving style suited the IAM approach so nothing was that new to me, but took home some good points and still work on my driving on my own one year after the test.

My feeling is whether you agree 100% or even 50% to the system of driving the fact that you are out there taking the couce will make you a safer driver. And in the end of the day that is what is important.

Good Luck

James

I'm just waiting to do my 'mock test' observed run next - just trying to get a time suitable for me and the other observer - hope to sort over next week.. Weather and short days is not helping but almost there guys. Trying to keep to dry days mostly as I'm in the little Zed.

Pass or fail it's been a good experience and has helped my driving no end and saved my bacon this summer up in the Highlands..

Times for observing vary.  I've Observed for three different groups and they all paired people up locally for mutually arranged runs, mine are sometimes in the evenings and either day of the weekend.

Observers are looking for the points covered in the book "Pass your Advanced Driving Test" (IAM) or Roadcraft (RoSPA), but it's things like observation, anticipation and planning; and also Safety, System, Smoothness and Speed (decreasing priority).

When approaching a junction, does the Associate plan to stop but look to go?  Do they make good progress?  Above all, do they drive safely?

You can read more at either

If I'm doing an assessment drive on you, I will watch you drive for half an hour, then I will spend half an hour showing you some of the things that you could improve on, the purpose of an assessed drive is to hopefully encourage you to do the full course.

If I'm observing you for real, I will be coaching (teaching) you to drive to the system, in my case during two hourly sessions on a Saturday morning, until I think you are close to the standard required for the test.

You will then be given a progress check by my area co-ordinator, with me in the back of your car, he will point out anything he thinks needs brushing up, you then apply for your test, normally getting in two more runs with me, then hopefully you pass !

Best Wishes

Nigel

I think I might end up doing one at some point, I also found doing a CBT improved my observation after I got back in my car from riding a bike.
What points do observers look for when accompanying someone?
