Hi All,

1990, 520iSE, 104k. Drives like a dream and looks fantastic (Thanks to speedy and his donor car  )  Had a m8 (great with cars) check over the car.... no probs found except for a dead rev counter and the service lights wouldn't reset?!? He tried a reset tool after trying pin 7, then replaced the board batts .... still no joy    Anyone have any suggestions?  Please. (Pains me to see him scratching his head)

Regards, Laura.

I read somewhere that the replacement batteries
have to be fully charged before they are soldered in,
or nothing will happen, the circuit board won't "see"
them. Do you have the analogue (rotating numbers)
dash?

Cheers,

Hi Shaun,

analogue type dash here, just rang my mechanical friend, he assured me batts are correct/full charge.

you must reset the oil service light for 10 seconds first then do it again for 20 seconds this re-sets the service light, pin 7 to earh same pin for the oil reset light tell the bloke who did it the first time and tell him to read the book next time

Laura Actual board can sometimes be at fault on these as well as the SI batteries themselves,  Id take a trip to breakers and get another instrument pod, saves hours of going round in circles with these problems, you can even swap your speedo over so the miles are correct.
528 for now

sorry mate I dont agree the book stipulates 2 settings one for oil reset that give you all the green lights and second for service reset ( same pin but for 20 seconds  after the oil reset) its very rare for the batteries to go even though the do eventually but my car is 16 years old and has the original batteries. if my batteries were charged on my camera I would take a picture as its in the book

I dont want to come in the middle of any one on advice I only say what I have done for many years so no disrespect to anyone because they could in the long run be right, only thing im pointing out is if the green lights all went on the chances are the rechargeable batters behind the dash are ok otherwise they would not work at all

Erm, Cheers Red1 (for helping and adding to my confusion) ?!?

Going for the replacement cluster option.... will this need to be from an identical model e34 (1990 build 520iSE) or would others fit? 525i etc??

Regards, Laura.

Hi Laura! If your dash has only 2 plugs on the back
like mine did then you can only fit an analogue dash.
You need to have 4 plugs to fit a 525 digital dash. I
have a digital dash ready to go in my 520 but it took
two days of studying diagrams, working out wire
colours, testing etc. I have to solder in about 20
wires to complete the job. Should have it done this
week.

Cheers,

Shaun

Hi Shaun,

thanks for the info, my cluster does have only two plugs (blue & yellow)

Off to search the net for a breaker selling a analogue dash for a 520ise 1990.

regards, Laura.
