It must be me .. I have just spent the best part of four hours fighting with this new filter. I dont have enough hands/fingers/space to fit the top, slide on the lower half, keep the pedals out the way, see what I am doing and get it to all fit together. I have given up in total exasperation/frustration now........

I have just had my E34 520i back from the local auto-aircon specialist.
Condensor is knackered, but should only be about 190.00 all in to change, re-gas etc. I managed to get a new condensor from GSF for 85GBP + the vat. As the rad has to come out, there is quite a bit of labour in this job. I asked John (the MD) if he'd use my supplied condensor & BMW coolant - he said yes, no problems. Very fair I felt.

New filter pollen fitted - my old one makes the posted dirty filter image  look positively clean......!
I was charged 15.00GBP + Vat. I've been recommended to have it changed every year, max 18 months.
With a deodourising treatment at the same time it will cost 40.00GBP + Vat every year/18months - now thats a bargain in my books, especially considering what frustration people have gone through to change the filter (or not) on this & other forums.

I know what I'm good at & what I'm not - changing filters definitely would fall into the latter so far as I'm concerned!

No BMW`s do not change them as part of the service on the e34 ,you will have to ask them to do it ,and belive me they will CHARGE accordingly as they do not like doing them.

Seems like you got a good deal. Just wish I knew what the knack was to fitting this b.... pollen filter. It obviously can be done, with varying degrees of difficulty .. maybe I need fingers about a foot long but at the moment I am sulking in the corner ...

Geoff only fit the top part so as it clears the steering column, ie not all the way ,then push the clutch pedal down with your shoulder and slide the lower part on to the top part ,then very carefully slide the whole filter into place, if you put the top section all the way in, your never get the lower section in,

I did tell you all how difficult these are to do ( and i wasn`t joking )

Andy - I never doubted you were right, I remember having this fight about 18 months ago when I last tried to change the filter and gave up then. I have done as you suggested but I had wedged the clutch pedal down with a lump of wood ...  with the filter top part about halfway into the housing I cannot get the lower part to fit because the brake pedal is in the way. Even leaning on it doesnt provide sufficient clearance.... I will give it another go tomorrow, today ended up pretty fraught as I am also in the process of swapping out the alternator ...

Try running the lower part behind the c/pedal Geoff you might find it a bit easer.

Andy, you are having a bubble aren't you? Not yet, no time today as was working this morning and this afternoon it's been peeing down so I have spent my time sorting out the alternator saga. S/H unit arrived but its more crap than the one on the car. Decided to go for a refurbished unit but now stuck with getting the pulley off... so if you get fed up teasing about the filter you can always start on the alternator!

You do not have to remove the rad to get the A/C condenser out on an E34.
Remove the front bumper (four bolts) remove the pusher fan (three nuts), and disconnect the two pipes from the front lower edge. Unscrew the two bolts on the top of the front panel which hold the hold of the condenser in place.
The condenser will now come out through the front of the car. If you need extra clearance you can unclip the two top rad mount clips and very gently pull the top back a few mm, but took me about 45 minutes all in from start to finish to remove the old one and fit the new one. (And that was on a 540i).
Means no draining and refilling of the main rad, and is also the method the Bentley manual gives.

Thanks SteveW - I'll be sure to advise the aircon firm of that.
Mind you, the coolant does need changing anyway...........!

They have allowed an hour of labour (max) to change the condensor & re-connect it, + the gas re-charge (usually 55.00 + VAT) so the quote  would seem about reasonable to me.

Filter now fitted! Woohoo!! Dont know what all the fuss was about ... what really helped was a) wedging the clutch pedal down with a suitable length of wood and b) removing the plastic clip from the evaporator housing. It was this clip which caused most of the aggravation because it simply gets in the way. Just squeeze the sides together and it slides out. Then slide top part of the filter about halfway in, slide on the lower half and then ease both parts into the housing.
