First Hi to everyone

Had a bit of a problem getting in lol

I have just bought a lovely 8 40 ci but it has got one annoyinng problem

Could you guys and girls please have a look at another forum where i explain it all

8'ers are a bit thin on the ground as I am sure you are aware, even thinner are people who know them well!

Suggest you take it to a BM dealer to plug into their diagnostics. This will give you a report out of the cars brain for about £50 + VAT.

Hi Steve & welcome.

If I was to bet money ...it would be that you need to replace both batteries.  Do not just replace one (they're wired in parallel).  If an E31 is left standing for more than 8 weeks with the batteries connected they will be drained down from all residual current being drawn from the different modules.  This can result in problems starting and all sorts of weird symptoms.

Sorry I havent replied back but been away/busy over the weekend

Sleeper did you have to put the cost like that lol

eta dont really think t gonna have anything to do with the brain and sensor faults tbh, if it starts happening more regularly (hasnt happened again since it did it twice that day with me ) and any of MY ideas dont work then as a last resort will have to think about having the brain checked

Aussie840 hmm batteries, only thing i got against the battery theory (as a couple of other people have suggested the same so is a possibility) is when it does turn the engine over it does it with ease, and surely if the battery/s were not charged enough it would struggle to turn the motor over, BUT having said that the fact that it hasnt happened for over a week now makes me think yes maybe and the fact i been using the car may have given the batterys a good charge, as i have done a couple of 200 mile runs in it, so fingers crossed that ma have been it.

 

Right if I could I am gonna ask another "easy one" , lol

anyone here who runs an 8 could u tell me roughly what consumption I should expect out if it, now the computer is telling me about 28mpg at a steady 70mph which aint to bad and livable but doing a 120ish mile run seems to drink about half a tank which is apparently 45 litres so if i am not wrong that is about 9.91 gallons which only equates to 12.1 mpg

so basically if you drove your 8 120 miles would you expect it to drink 1/2 a tank of fuel ?

new it may be thirsty but that more than my old 600bhp Cosworth

PS one for any mods/admin i have not received any mails to inform me of replies to my post, and there also was a problem with my registration, as in i never got a confirmation email after repeated attempts, would it be possible for someone pc knowledgable to look into this and maybe find out why i dont seem to be able to receive emails from the forum/club.

I get...

city/suburban driving - 15 L/100km

Highway - 10 L/100km

Hoolgan mode - 17-18 L/100km

Last week the check out chick at the servo asked me if I'd like to put that on layby when I went in to pay...

p.s. go to diagnostic mode on your OBC and go to option 9 to check the battery Voltage whilst starting.  from my experience batteries in an 8 that have been rundown are never the same again end usually end up being replaced.

Hi Ian

About nearly exactly the same as mine works out to in mpg with 1 gallon = 4.54 litres and 1K = 0.621 miles for all three driving styles

BUT it just dont seem to equate to what im seeing on the fuel gauge or what im putting in, but also it hard to work out exactly as very rarely drive a distance that constantly to one style  lol

Wow that diagnostic mode reads a bit complicated  that will have to wait till i have a bit more time to study it, but if maybe u could give me a quick rundown of how to do the battery monitoring bit (as i couldnt see a code for that exactly, but was just rushing out the dorr, which is when i decided it looked complicated lol) in easy terms :)

 

Being the asstute person I am I noticed u are from Aus :) lol

Yes i know it a reasonable sized country, but just wondering if u anywhere near or maybe even heard of lol, Albury Wodonga

Hi,

Ive had my 840Csi for nearly two months and would agree that you get 29/30 mpg at "Motorway" speeds and about 20 mpg around town.

Also recommend using proper super unleaded and not supermarket unleaded. I get 10% improvement with Total exelliance  ( or whatever they call it), Optimax or Esso super unleaded.

Enjoy the car and I agree with the dead battery theory.

Hi Steve, see if you can get into diag mode first, if use the 1 button to select option 9, then hit set... it shows the voltage in real time.

Yes well spotted I am from Oz. I am in Melbourne (the bottom right bit of Oz...ignoring Tasmania of course...as we do) Albury Wodonga is about 4-5 hrs away on the border with New South Wales.

Which part of UK you from?

Actually not that complicated lol, well if u bother to read it properly

BUT any idea what i should be seeing, sat at 12V with ignition off when cranking dropped to 10. something but hard yto see as rising back up (as said car starts easily so not cranking for long ) to 14V with engine running. Not too far off what I might expect to see actually. ?????

I come from a little town outside of a town called Bedford in Bedfordshire, reason I ask about Albury is im working with a bloke from there, real nice blo9ke actually, but to be honest I havent met an Aus I dont like yet

Another little gremlin reared its head the other day :( nothing major tho :) , when i lift the drivers handle the window doesnt drop, not untill I pull the door a bit, on inmvestigation have found lifting the handle dont drop the window but the catch dropping that holds door shut, wondered if that common, maybe the catch or pillar it locks to may have moved slightly not allowing catch to just fall freely ??? as said nothing major and not stopping me opening doorand does drop just as u pull door and rises again when shut so just an annoyance really, want everything working as it should ;)

Hi Steve,

Let me check what voltage drops to during cranking for mine (10 sounds a tad low).  14V during running is good. It will often be between 13.7-9 with lights/heater on etc.

FYI the battery draw on power down is here and here 

But its the current load during cranking which could be your issue, and whacking a voltmeter across the battery terminals doesn't really indicate whether the batteries are in a state to cope with this load.

Re window

From your last post hard to say whether its door latch or handle micro switch.  - there are 2 micro switches (one for inside handle / one for outside handle) to control window drop...are both of yours playing up or just one?   Try resetting position sensors by putting windows up and holding window switch in for 3+ seconds.

By the way defects for the window activation system are stored in one of the computers which can be read by a BMW DIS (although you will need to find an 8 mechanic thats knows how to read them)

Albury is a nice place (the bendix mintex brake pad factory is there!). Say G'day to your friend for me.
