I've just read lots of previous stuff re immobiliser problems but not found anything quite like this. Not satisfied with the 190 BHP smoking out the back wheels of my 330d I've had it lowered (Eibach) and the engine re-mapped. The performance is better, 216.7 BHP and it's beautifully controlled via the lowered suspension. All was well until 2 weeks later when it just wouldn't start. It turned over as briskly as usual but the fire would not light! I thought maybe I'd flooded it & waited for a few mins. Then it started up first time as usual. The same thing happened a few days later only that time the engine fired up then turned off, repeatedly. After much gnashing of teeth and looking round for a branch (al a Basil Faulty) it started 1st turn again. The same thing now occurs infrequently & without any apparent link ie it doesn't seem to be linked to cold or hot starting damp or dry weather. Sometimes it just turns over, sometimes it fires up and turns off. It seems likely that the re-map is to blame but R & E Performance at Bury who did the job say they cant see how it can be involved. An nice AA man who came out the other day (but it was running when he arrived) thinks it is the immobiliser. Could my mobile phone be involved. I know there were a lot of problems for BMW's at the Trafford centre due to phone masts etc. Pse help. It's a 2000 E46 330d

Dunno 'bout mobile phones or the re-map, but I have had many cars with immobilisers and in my experience engines/starters don't run at all when immobilised. My e36 just sits there when the key is turned (immobilised) and the LED is on constantly. Don't know much about your e46 (which sounds nice BTW), or diesels; but could it be a glow plug issue?
currently driving a RENAULT clio sport 172!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't think so but I'll let you know when the Dealers had a look cos' I can't take much more of this! I was scared to stop for fuel yesterday in case I was stranded on the forecourt. Thanks for getting back though.

Problem solved - There is a sensor on the bottom of the cam shaft which re-assures the management system that all is well. The sensor was faulty & when everything in the engine appeared to the computer to be working except the cam shaft the computer protected the engine by not allowing it to start.

Apologies to anyone more technically gifted than me the above is the idiot guide I was given by the main stealer who charged me £135 to fix it. Actually not that bad I suppose.
