I'm buying a 740i (1993) and I need to know what type of security device is likely to have been fitted for insurance purposes.

It hay keyless entry if that is any help.

Thanks

Paul

Unfortunately there were several types of alarm/immobiliser systems fitted as the cars came out of the showrooms, so unless you have a lot more details it is not going to be easy to give any sort of opinion on what exactly you have fitted. In fact the only real way would be to take the car to a BMW dealer and persuade the service department to ident the system for you.

But personally if this is for an insurance quote I would not bother. Just get a quote from a company that will cover your car with its present system not specified; just as original fitment. I am assuming that your remote has BMW on it, the reason why I say not to bother is that some of the insurance companies that start requesting details about the exact system fitted, then go on and insist on it being a Cat 1 or Cat 2 system, even if your car had been fitted with say a system 3 T you then have to get a certificate from an authorised source, which will cost you as much as £95… if you can persuade them that even though Thatcham has delisted the system because of age, it still is compliant as it was fitted before the delisting.

If you still want to go down the route with these sorts of insurers a better solution would be to get a Cat 2 immobiliser fitted for something like £150 and they will provide the certificate that you require at the time of fitting.

Thanks for the info.

Well since posting I have got the VIN from the dealer and have been around to the BWM main dealer in Coventry.

I have a copy of the spec of the vehicle. It says :- 302 REMOTE CONTROL ANTI-THEFT DEVICE and 303 ADDITIONAL ANTI-THEFT  DEVICE.

I'm assured my the main dealer that this IS CAT 2 but my insurers still want a written statement from them to that effect. :-\

I'd like to go somewhere else for insurance but their quote for the cover they give beats the others by miles.

the dealer can supply a letter to state it was supplied or fitted when new, this is normally all the ins co require. I don't know wether the dealer will charge, but they can at least clarify it was fitted at the time of sale, and was in working order.
