Tinkling sound when changing gears

Can anyone please shed some light on this problem. When I change gears from "D" to "R" I hear this tinkling sound coming from beneath the car. The car performs perfectly fine in every regard but this noise can be somewhat annoying. Thanks for any responses.

	Could be something loose on the gearchange mechanism. If you can get it up on ramps or some other safe lifting device, you could have a friend sit in the car wibbling the gear selector while you're underneath listening for & locating your noise problem. Second thoughts, something may have dropped into the selector's trim, remove the trim bits and underneath you may find a pen top, one penny, a paperclip and a false tooth! Cheers, Shaun

	When the gearbox changes gear do you feel the back end lift up slightly as the gears engage and disengage? Could be something inside the gearbox. Or as others have said a bit of loose linkage. Could also be a heat shield vibrating. You will only hear this when you are stopped and that is when you are changing gear so it may be a coincidence. If you want piece of mind, take the car to an Automatic Transmission Specialist and ask him to check it out and while you are there get a service done on the box too. At 5 years old the fluid should be changed. This will also smooth out your gear changes. HTH Andrew

	The gear change is absolutely smooth and the ratios seem fine too. The only conclusion I can come to is that there is something loose or not tightened thats making the noise. I see that you are one of those followers who believe the Differential oil should be changed after some time. Funny how BMW advise against this insisting it is a lifetime oil. As far as my limited knowledge goes the oil in there is just standard ATF fluid and we all know that it will deteriorate with time, no doubt. Also I usually take your signature motto, If it aint broke don't fix it! Edited by zayd55

	Yup, my E39 is due an Insp I soon and I will enquire about a diff oil change as I noticed the other day that I have a minute weep from the diff drain plug. I believe that the E39 diff oil should be changed every second Insp II. I'm fairly sure it says this in the handbook! Can't comment on the oil in the diff but something tells me that diffs don't use ATF. Some manual BMW gearboxes are filled with ATF though. But BMW ATF is something of a special thing. It isn't a case of popping down to Halfrauds to buy Castrol Dexron III that would go in any Ford or Vauxhall! I have 4 litres of the stuff left over from my Vauxhall Senator 3.0i 24V auto that I now have no use for! One thing with my sig - define the difference between routine maintenance and 'ain't broke'!
