Topic: e39 530d starting problem Posted: 27-July-2005 at 14:32 |
My 530d's really frustrating starting problem..... Every morning starts fine. However, if i drive down to the shops (10 mins) leave the car for about 20-30 mins, it refuses to start. It turns over no problem and occasionallly 'catches' but wont kick into life. If I then leave it for about an hour it starts no problem! I've tried carrying the spare key with me (in case its not recognising my key) but to no avail. It hasn't been to the dealer yet, but spoke to them on the phone and the guy didn't sound too sure they could find the fault (but was sure about charging me to find the fault!). Has anyone had this problem before? Any suggestions? |

I am pretty sure that I have read of a starting problem on a 530d but can't recall which of the following sites it was at, although I think the first is good place to start a search. Hope this helps.
www.bmwland.co.uk (the 5 series forum)

OK, just did a quick search myself and if you go to the bmwland link (sorry I have no idea how to attach the link of the thread needed) and try a search using the words "530d starting problem" in the 5 series forum only, on page 5 of the replies there is a thread entitled "starting oddity on 530d (2001 x plate)" which may be of interest to you as 2 owners discuss the problems they have had.
Sorry I can't be of more help and hope you get it sorted soon. |

Thanks for replies, interesting reading.
UPDATE: Paid for a diagnosis by BMW Dealer(£50). They say that I have 1 or more 'leaking injectors', causing loss of fuel pressure in the common rail. Cost to Fix? Well they say £250 + vat for the labour and £250 + vat for EACH injector which may need replacing. Apparently they cant tell which injector is faulty until they have them out of the car.... so I could be looking at 6 injectors and the labour.... Ouch! Needless to say I haven't taken them up on their offer yet. I'm hoping to find a specialist who can test the injectors before I hand over my hard earned to bmw. Just in case you were wondering BMW wont offer any help with either the parts or labour... nice considering the cars only done 80k and has FSH from bmw! |

On the BMWland thread I suggested the cam sensor being faulty, which turned out to be correct. Perhaps start with that before doing the injectors as it is a part to £60-70.

Well, after the dealer performing a diagnosis and saying it was definitely one of the injectors, I took it in again so they could tell me which one (with the intention of fitting the new injector myself).
However, they diagnosed... a fault cam sensor. You are right again Anders! Well I've been running the car for a week now with a new cam sensor and its been absolutely fine. Thanks for your help! |

Congrat's xyz530d - pleased it is running well. Given I recommended some sites on this thread can I also suggest the forum found at www.bmw5.co.uk - it is very good too. Nice one Anders btw!
