Wether or not the vanos unit is better than the older  (24v)unit is a bit of a moot point i think, and whats this the older unit sounds better??? Thats a new one on me, the only difference in sound is when the vanos engine starts to rattle

The 520i is really a waste of time. They're no faster
than the 518i (except when you get it really wound
up) and use as much fuel (if not more) than a 525i
which costs no more to buy second hand. The 520i
Autos are just death on the Nile, dog slow and about
21 mpg. Had one as a loan car once :-(

The 518i is under rated, especially the later M43
engined cars (late L plate onwards).

P.S why does my post come out all narrow????

My brother has a Vanos E34 525i. It picks up and really chases for the redline about 300rpm lower, and arguable is a bit smoother which is down to his being a 95 vs my 92 and generally being a bit quieter/more refined anyway, but to be honest there's nowt in it; I wouldn't care which engine I had. they're both gems.

Hey Drew, steady on with the 520i bashing! I am on
my second 520iA and while it is no rocket it is more
than adequete around town (when last did you need
big power in an urban environment) and can more
than hold its own on the open road. Here is Ireland it
makes a lot of sense as the 525 carries big tax and
forgive me, but to me BMW's are all about 6 cylinder
refinement so the 518i was never a contender. The
525i is a great car, but in the real world driving the
520i gives little away to it.

Drew; have to agree with Don; there's power when you need it, and tax here for the 520 is about €580 as opposed to about €820 for the 523 (correct me if I'm wrong).  Also, insurance difference for me would have been about €200.  So that's €440 a year to run an engine I can't use!!!

BTW; a '97 540 cut me up pretty badly on a roundabout yesterday, nearly causing a pileup because the girl driving it wanted to get where she was going 10 seconds quicker.  Funnily enough, she was car behind me going into the next roundabout less than 1/2 a mile later.  So much for a 540 vs a 520 in an urban environment!!!

Don; what part of Ireland are you in?  And are you doing Mondello?

All things said, it is true that there is no replacement for displacement! I would love to have a 535, 540 or M5 as my daily driver... but here in Ireland they would be just too bloody expensive to feed, tax, insure (on my budget that is ). I'll just have to win the lotto!

Nothing wrong with the 520 really - mines a sound motor, performance is fine for the daily run...better than a 4pot 518i (ive driven one and it seemed dog slow) and alot cheaper to insure than the 525i..
