Topic: E36 325TDS Gearbox Posted: 22-August-2005 at 12:50 |
A mate of mine is looking to get a new (second hand) manual gearbox for his 325tds.
Since there aren't many 325tds in the scrap yards over here, can anyone
tell me which gearboxes (from which models) will bolt straight onto his
motor? I just want to gather a bit of info to open his options up a
little!!!
Cheers,
Denis

Funnily enough I've been looking at this as a way to extend the ratios in my car following it's chip - I wouldn't mind a bit longer gearing.
From what I can gather, all 6 cylinder E36's (with the exception of the M's) uses a ZF S5D gearbox. The difference is in the numbers:-
325TDS 260Z 328i 320Z 323/late 325 250Z early 325 310Z
Problem is, I don't know if the numbers at the end are to do with power ratings or gearing, or wether they're all the same (the bell housing's look very similar), and the geaaring is done at the diff.
Best bet I recon, would be to ring someone like FAB and ask. If you do, let me know!!

Good stuff, thanks for the info Carl! Might end up calling a specialist alright!
Anyone know the differences between the boxes above? Or does anyone
know the ratios of any of the boxes listed above? Or a source where I
could find this info?
Thanks!

Guys, 'don't know if the 'boxes are interchangeable, but 316 to 325 petrols have the same ratios. The diesels are, however, different.

My buddy is not too worried about ratios (as long as they are not way
off the standard ratios that is), do you think any of the petrol boxes
would bolt straight on?
Any idea what are the chances that the ratios in a 325 petrol and 325tds would be similar?
I know where there is an E30 M3 box for sale, but I assume there is no
way it would bold straight onto the diesel!! Shame, the ratios are
probably very different anyway!!

denis, petrol from 1st to 5th;
4.23, 2.52, 1.67, 1.22, 1.00.
Diesel;
5.09, 2.80, 1.76, 1.25, 1.00.
I'd imagine that all the E36 gearboxes would be the same externally. I wonder, though, if the shaft would larger in the more powerful engines.
