I have an E39 530i Sport with the High OBC.  When starting up the car the airbag check light does not illuminate.  I have performed the lamp test, which is number 2 in the test regime.  All the other lights illuminate except for the airbag one.

Am I right in assuming then that this means its just the bulb that is actually defective.  The instruction manual states that if the light does not come on when turning ignition to position 1 then the system is defective.

How do you preform the 'number 2 test regime'?

I'd get it checked out with a diagnostic reader.  If the light doesn't come on or stays on all the time the system has a fault and may fail to operate i.e face meets steering wheel on impact = not good.

I had a fault with my airbag light recently.  It was a fault with a connection on the drivers seat.

When you turn the key to ignition position 1 hold in the right side button which you normally use for check control for about 10 seconds.  Then you should see message displaying, Test 1.  If you then keep pressing this button it will go through a list of test sequences some of which are very interesting indeed.

I have only used test number 2 which lights everything up.  Pressing some of the other test numbers could lead to very undesired effects so I would look into them first before executing the operation.

All this is conditional based on your having the High OBC.

If the airbag light ain't coming on go get the dealer check it out straight away.Yes the system is defective and may not go off if you have a crash,or go off when you don't want it too.

How long have you had the car?

Thanks

I think I only have low OBC as mine is just a poverty spec 523i SE.

Why doesn't that surprise me that there would be loads of undesired side effects from doing such a test!

I would get your air bag sorted out ASAP cos it might not work if you need it too!

I don't even have the low OBC. Does this make my car 3rd world poverty then?

What sort of undesired side effects???
The world is a tragedy to those who feel, but a comedy to those who think.
