Topic: WET FOOTWELL- REALLY NEED ADVICE PLEASE! Posted: 25-November-2002 at 09:43 |
Hi there I have posted a similar question before to no response, but I'm really desperate for answers... My E30 325i convertible gathers water on the nearside rear passenger footwell, damp nearest the seat bench. The roof seems dry on the inside and I've had a new seal round the roof compartment lid, so I've no idea where this water is coming from. Can anyone help? Much appreciated!! |

Might the water be coming from the wheelarch? I hope not. Remove the interior side panel and look inside the inner fender (between outside fender and inner steel wheelarch 'tub'). Or poke with a screwdriver from the tire side. My E30 (1987) needed welding on all 4 weelarches (front and rear sides) due to corrosion. Because of the sideskirts it is not easy to see if the metal is gone behind the plastic skirts and wheelarchliners. Mine had wet left front footwell, water came through the leftfront wheelarch and windowsurround (A-pillar). |

Also check the (external) sill drains. They are ~20mm long spacings at the join to the floor seam.

On a completely diferent model of car I found a leak from teh air con hose which had teh same effect - not sure if you have a/c nor route of pipework. Thought it might help anyway ( now website plug for the free advice !! www.sportscarguides.com) |

Is there a hose at the bulkhead like an elephants trunk? If so then it will be blocked, which sends the water back in through the bulkhead and into the footwell.Just give it a clean out.I know that the E30 M3 has 1 & is a common problem with them

OK, promise not to prolong this saga, but thanks for the advice above. My mechanic has flushed the drains but there appeared to be no blockage. I personally think that the water is getting into where the convertible roof struts go into the back of the car (just behind the rear windows) and through into the rear passenger cabin that way. The roof is frayed and worn around here. Water is definitely also collecting in the roof housing area and it must be draining out into the back of the car? Does this sound familiar to anyone or does it make sense?

Hiya JHoward, i have an 89 325i sports (m-tech bodykit ect...) and have had a leak in mine for a short while, upon investigation i found one of the wheel arches had corroded quite badly, its going in on the 30th of Dec for repair, so it might be worth a look behind your wheels. but be careful as not to poke a bigger hole and make matters worse like i did, (bugger). |

Would a soaked rear bench aid in the diagnosis? |
