Hello, I am contemplating buying an 840Ci, probably around 1995 as I don't want to spend much more than about £12,000. Does anyone have a list of what the standard equipment is on an 840 for that year? Having read a lot of adverts for cars for sale, some seem to list a lot of stuff and others don't and I'm not sure if that's due to just not listing them or whether some have a lot more extras than others. Also, I currently drive a 1994 325i Coupe (I have owned two E34 520is in the past). Having read the posts on here, I don't think that the running costs are that much higher than my own car if I get it serviced by a specialist as opposed to a dealer. Is that pretty much the case? The last Inspection II on mine was £1,000 due to several new bits... I only get around 25mpg in mine too. TIA!

Hi Robstar, This link might help as our RHD spec cars were shipped very similiar. After 96, they tended to ship with more of the 840Ci sport options like the spoilers, mirrors, t-stars... etc which attract a higher resale price. Running costs aren't that much different from a 540 or 740, things like sunroof seals, door/window seals etc that have been exposed to UK weather & deteriorated will be a pain to replace so get your pre purchase inspection mechanic to check those well. Exhausts are pricey to replace too, stay away from aftermarket ones, IMO they're a waste of money. Also if clube31.com is backonline, there is a good PPI page there to check out. Also to reduce your fuel bills this site might help www.realestate.com.au :) Phil can probably help you more with M60 nikasil blocks issue in the UK (I didn't think it was a problem in Europe, but apparantly UK had some reports) But ask around the local BMW dealers and see if they have had many 540s or 740s running M60 blocks with this problem. Robstar to add to Ians good advice have a look at www.autotrader.co.uk and see what options are available on UK Models for sale. Mine is 1995 and it didn't have cruise, it was an option then. I've approached BMW about having it retro fitted and drawn a blank. Better to wait and get what you want. For the sort of money you are talking about you may still find one with BMW used car warranty. Mine has 115K on the clock and BM are still offering the warranty. I believe they will upto 165K (rumour has it) for 7's and 8's. I think its worth it and you'll get some piece of mind. Wouldn't touch anything without a full BM service history. Its a complex car. I doubt that running costs are much more different than the 740 or 540. Servicing will be very similar I can imagine. I've had 27 MPG max on a run which isn't bad at all. Down the shops pretty grim 14-18mpg This site should help you with what to look for before buying. http://membres.lycos.fr/technice31/prepurchase.php As Ian pointed out you need to be aware of the Nikasil engine block issue. The bottom line is that high sulphur fuels sold in the past caused catastrophic failures in Nikasil block engines (Not just the M60). BMW were changing them out under warranty although its doubtful they would do that for an older car now. Have a look at these sites. http://www.lestac.co.uk/bmw/nikasil.htm#what_causes http://www.koalamotorsport.com/ Don't let it put you off buying one. Its a fantastic car. Look at www.e31.net. Load up the 0-125 mph acceleration video, turn your speakers up...... Good luck Phil |
