The whole point of giving away the book was to tempt you into buying a new E63/64. The money angle's still there!!

I don't think that's the reason. I think it's to make him feel good about the dealer so he is more likely to remain a good customer. Ok so the line about it being a special book just for him may have been bull but it was still nice of them to ring up and give him one with no provocation.

I have worked very closely with people in sales before and this kind of gesture is quite common in promoting a good relationship with a customer.

The trouble with this kind of gesture is it can backfire.

A company who do (very soon to be 'did') a lot of business with us have been very generous with the gifts. Not just the obligitory dairy and calendars, but expensive nights out, trips to the touring cars at Croft, holding seminars in foriegn stately homes that are all paid for. The trouble with all this is after a while you start to think 'how come they can afford to do all this?' Especially at a time when most companies in the our industry are cutting back (the price of oil is really screwing us). After a while it occurs to you that the reason they can afford to be so generous is because they are making huge profits, why? because they are chagring about twice as much as other companies for the same products. So the upshot is they have lost the business. Now had they just kept a low profile and not splashed the cash (our cash in fact!) so much we probably would not have looked into the costs.

Perhaps we need closure on this one (and Peter, I agree with what you say above).

The point is....they didn't have to give me the book.  They could have just binned it.  They didn't need to bother calling me.  I'm not going to be buying another car from them for a long time; and who knows if I never do again?

However, as is so often said, it's the thought that counts.

On a slightly different note though.....

They e-mailed me yesterday to say they have a new M6 in, and available for sale!  I told them I wasn't changing and they said they knew....but that if I wanted to go and take the M6 for a whirl I was welcome to.  So guess what I'll be doing tomorrow!

Yes, you'll be part-xing your 645 for something that has an "M" on it's backside!!!!!
My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl who saw Ferris pass-out at 31 Flavours last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

Coasting,

I know exactly what you mean, it is the thought that counts.  I'm a customer of Victoria (Priory) too and completely agree that their customer service is top notch.  I bought a car from them in 1996 and didn't return for eight years.  I was looking at a car on the forecourt when the original salesman (Richard) from 8 years ago came up to us and remembered our names immediately and began asking us about our family!  Yes, we bought the car.

I didn't buy it - it's now been sold to a specialist car dealer in Derbyshire who had a customer commission him to find one.  So no doubt they've sold it on at an even larger profit.

I am just too wary of Year 1 depreciation on it.

They wanted my car plus £30k which is actually a good deal.

Mine is 2 months old and list with the options is £62,250, but I paid £55,400 for it so it equates to them giving me £53 on a car that books more like £48k now (the initial loss being VAT as the 6 is actually holding value remarkably well in the current market).

However, the M6 is reputed to be under review in terms of pricing - and I've had that passed to me from a very reliable source.  If the review went ahead it's likely to see it's basic price drop from £80k to £74k - so that'd wipe out a chunk to begin with.  Then, if it suffers further losses then you be looking at the £83k car being worth £60k within a year.  It doesn't take a genius to figure out that equates to the car costing £1,667 a month in depreciation.

As much as I wanted the car, I'm not prepared to throw my hard saved cash away like that!

So I'll wait 18 months or so and see where it is then.

Anyway, I'm so pleased with the 645 I'd be reluctant to let many of its qualities go so early.

It also has to be considered that if you're going to spend £83k on what would, like the 645, become a weekend car, then you're into second hand Gallardo territory....hmmm!

Talking bout good dealers....i use Harry Fairbairn Giffnock. We've had our ups and downs but overall i guess they equate to being ok.... However, on a recent(Sept 05) trip to the showroom i was given complimentary Better Driving Day pass at Rockhingham. That equates to about £200 or thereabouts??

The bad news is they were booked for earlier this month....and i forgot
