    Posted: 19-June-2003 at 15:51

Hi,

Sorry if this has been posted before but as you can see I am new to this forum. I have recently sold my Rover Coupe and am very keen on buying a E30 318iS. I have been to look at a few and have found a lovely 1990 H reg white one. I was just wondering if anyone could give any tips as to what I should be looking for problem wise? The body is immaculate and the mileage seems average (just over 100,000) but I am unsure as to what I should be looking/listening for engine wise. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve.

Good information on Brendan Purcell's site, devoted to this model...

http://www.esatclear.ie/~bpurcell/index.html

I bought mine with 108k on the clock. It started sounding like diesel, so if the one you're looking at doesn't purr, you might end up changing timing tensioner, guides/chain. Mine was also blowing slightly at the manifold, apparently a bad design that needed rewelding. Other than that no troubles engine-wise.

As always, listen for noise from the diff. (Mine's starting to grumble, but I deny it's my fault!)

Hope you get a nice one... They're great cars.

Omi

Thanks Omi!!

When I first went to have a look there was none of the sounds that you mentioned but there was a slight blow from the exhaust but I intend to replace it anyway with a nice new full system. But I do have to agree that the E30's are by far the best ever BMW's IMO, I have a few friends that have 320i's but I have heard that if you can find a nice 318iS it's a better investement, would you agree?

Again thanks for the info.

Steve.

Yes, my site has a specific Buyers Guide, I think under the Common Faults section. You can find it though the index anyway.

I cannot emphasis enough that oil is critical in this car - diff and engine especially.

The engine usually is quite tappy but avoid anything with excessive valvetrain noise.

Have you spoken with jonb on this and other forums, he had a white 318is for sale a week or so back.

Enjoy!

Hi Mark,

No I have only just joined this forum so I haven't had chance to meet any of the other users. Thanks for the info, as if this one I am looking at again tomorrow isn't very good I can try and contact Jonb with regards to his. Not very keen on the red ones so I think I will give the one on e-bay a miss but again thanks for letting me know. Can't wait to go and see it/ buy it now!!

Thanks,

Steve.

Sorry for replying to my own post but I would just like to say thanks to those people who gave me the advice on the 318iS. I went out yesterday and bought a lovely white one without a mark on . All I need to do is replace the back box and get it in for a service.

Just a quick question, has anybody got any front fogs that will fit the 318's for sale as I think that they would top it off just right. I would also like a set of half leathers but I know they are hard to come by!!

Hopefully I will be able to get a few pictures posted on here during the week.

Thanks again,

Steve.

Check German and Swedish or Euro Car Parts for both the back box and foglamps. You will probably need the mounting brackets for the latter too.

Good luck with the car!

Expect the fogs to be pricey - around £60 each !!

Bloody hell the fog lamps are more expensive than the exhaust!!  But I know they will set it off nicely so going to have to get some cash together. Cheers for the website info though b318isp. Still not sure whether to get a standard back box or go for a stainless one. Prices are pretty similar.

Cheers,

Steve.
