i have a pretty juddery car over bumps and ive been told it has after market shocks and has been a tiny bit lowered  at some stage.

it was recommended to get the front shocks changed. I just wanted to fit standard front replacements. do you have to match up the shocks from front to rear?

what if i put on standard ones up front and not the rear, will the car become unbalanced or sit funny if i don;t standardise all round?

To correctly balance the handling and cornering characteristics then it would be sensible to change all of them Johnny but if the rear shocks are adjustable you may be able to balance out the handling through trial and error. This could be all it needs but you won't know until it's tried.

The way the car sits is down to the spring rates and sizes and you may need to change the front springs if you are replacing the struts if they are older. How the car rides on those springs is controlled by the shocks and roll bars. When dealing with a car that has been altered and you are not happy with it then my opinion is to take back to standard and then go from there.
