Grinding sound at lower end on 520 Auto

I've got a 520 Auto 1986 and am getting a grinding scraping kind of sound when I pull away at the lower end. It tends to be worse when I start the car and goes fairly quickly once I have reached some speed. Any ideas? I fear the automatic gearbox may be going...
