Paul I agree wioth you, if the objective is to get other the 50-60% extra BHP from stock then turbo is the way to go. Up to double the engine output you might get away with stock internal, maybe just lowering the compression and playing with the tuning (advance) to get you bhp. Past that, you will however need to change piston, conrods and the likes to withstand the pressure from the turbo and that's a very expensive business!

M3AOR - be careful with all this talk of turbo and super chargers.  It was a discussion just like this that led Martin astray and into his brief, but glorious, affair with the M3!  Read his sig.!  A broken man.....

Thats right - a brief but torrid affair.

Came to the conclusion that you cannot exploit a modern cars performance on the public roads in this country and that what I really want is a trackday machine.

Hence the change to a boring commuter vehicle and on the look out for something that fits the other bill - no more compromising on either side.

I had a Passat GT, 136bhp standard, converted it to a G60, up to 158bhp...

She flew.... although fuel consumption went from around 30-32 down to 20-25mpg!

Cant begin to imagine what a supercharger would do to a beemer's fuel consumption! Many people I know who have had turbo's fitted have noticed better fuel consumption in normal driving than when they had NA engines. Something to think about before you whack on your charger (£300????????)
