hi, thanx for the reply, so u think they will basically let me kno what it is and get it sorted...i just wanted some idea of what it was before i go to someone and they tell me somethin wrong and charge me a lot of money for doin nothin!!!

the engine is in good condition and have had the top end re built... and spent a bit of money on it... jsut caant figure out what this noise is... the body is really good on the car... i just dont wanna hold on to it if the engine is on its way out.

Any decent garage should be prepared to give you an estimate. The benefit of the BM dealership is that they have all the technical info on your less common 318iS and are more likely to have a member of staff who has been on the M42 course etc. Also, if their estimate is wildly out you can make a complaint to BMWGB who will sort them out. To be fair to a BM dealer, or any other garage, they cannot anticipate all problems as very often disturbing mechanicals can lead to other repairs.

Like I say, get an estimate and at least you have got a starting point.

The 318is is prone to cracking the exhaust manifold. This can produce a range of noises.

But a grinding noise?

I'd try an independant specialist.

Cheers, Neil
